Participants wishing to make reservations for hotel accommodations should complete Hotel Application form and return it to Nippon Travel Agency no later than September 7, 2001.

Cancellation for Hotel reservation

In the event of a cancellation of hotel reservation, written notification should be sent to Nippon Travel Agency (NTA). Your payment will be refunded after deducting the following cancellation charges.

4 to 13 days before first night of stay: 30% of daily room rate per room

3 days to 1 day before first night of stay: 50% of daily room rate per room

On the day of reservation or no notice given: 100% of daily room rate per room

Confirmation and Payment

Upon receipt of Hotel Application Form, Nippon Travel Agency will send you Confirmation & Invoice with total amount due.

Please choose one of the two methods of payment and specify which one on Hotel Application Form. All payments must be in Japanese Yen. If you choose payment by credit card, the total amount will be charged to your credit card prior to the symposium.

Highway bus is operated every 10 – 30 min daily. Travel time is approx. 60- 70 min and costs 1,250. The bus terminal and ticket office are located at the Yaesu South Exit at JR Tokyo Station.

Tsukuba, Your Host City

Tsukuba City, just 50 km north from Tokyo, with beautiful Mt. Tsukuba to the north is well known as the location of Tsukuba Science Expo ’85. It currently functions as an internationally–known center of science and technology as well as education. A number of parks are also scattered around the city.

Climate

The climate of October in Tsukuba is just moderate and comfortable, with the average temperatures at 64.94゜F / 18.3゜C. It is the best season for holiday makers. The air is refreshing, and tree leaves turn red and yellow. The conference hall and all major hotels are air-conditioned.

Passport and Visa

All travelers entering Japan must have a valid passport. A participant requiring a visa should apply to a Japanese consular office or diplomatic mission in his or her respective country prior to departure. Participants are advised to contact their local travel agencies or airline companies.

Currency

The currency used in Japan is yen (¥). Foreign currency or traveler’s checks can be changed to yen at major banks, hotels, or airports. Only Japanese yen is accepted at stores and restaurants.

It is necessary to show your passport when changing traveler’s checks.

Bills come in units of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen, and coins in units of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, and 500 yen.

The approximate exchange rate for U. S. $1 is 125 Yen (as of April 2001).

Traveler’s Checks and Credit Cards

Traveler’s checks are not as popular in Japan as in some other countries. They are usually accepted only by leading banks and major hotels.

Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Diners Club cards are widely accepted at hotels, department stores, shops, and restaurants.

Tax and Tipping

There is no custom of individual tipping in Japan. Instead, a service charge will be included in the bill where applicable. A 5% sales tax applies to almost all consumer goods made in Japan.
