General Shutdown Information for All:

Prior to a Furlough: Answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) and other JSC specific information will be posted on the JSC People internal website at Agency shutdown information such as a NASA Shutdown Furlough Guide for Employees and NASA FAQs will be posted at These websites will become inaccessible during a furlough. You may want to print or save these files to a personal device for easy access to this information during a shutdown.

Should a shutdown occur, you are encouraged to monitor for Center status and the “Additional Information” menu in the upper left cornerto access much of the helpful information previously available thru the JSC and NASA furlough websites.

Full-Time Excepted Status - employees performing critical duties which involve the safety of human life or the protection of property.

  • In the event that an announcement is made that NASA is shutdown and employees are furloughed, you will be expected to report to work as usual, on site or remotely via telework as approved by your supervisor.
  • You are expected to assist with orderly shutdown activitieson shutdown day as declared by the agency.
  • Though you are Full-Time Excepted, you will receive an official furlough email notice in your nasa.gov e-mail during the orderly shutdown period.
  • Please notify your supervisor of your receipt of the notice by email or signed copy.
  • If you do not receive your notice, check your junk mailbox.
  • If you have any questions, please contact your supervisor.
  • Complete your time in WebTADS for the hours worked through the last day of appropriations (your workday prior to shutdown day).
  • Further guidance on reporting times in WebTADS after a shutdown will be forthcoming from the JSC Chief Financial Officer.
  • During a furlough, you are required to track any time you actually work to support shutdown activities and approved excepted functions.
  • If the excepted activities to which you are assigned end before the end of the shutdown, you will automatically be furloughed when no longer working excepted activities per your furlough notice.
  • You may not take leave during a furlough and any prior approved paid time off will be cancelled. Any time during duty hours that you are not working, will be non-pay, non-duty furlough status.
  • If you revert to a furloughed status, please set your voicemail and out-of-office email to a furloughed status. We suggest you say you are unavailable due to a Government furlough.
  • You can access Employee Express at to print your leave and earnings statement for proof of federal employment if you file for unemployment compensation.

Part-Time Excepted Status - employees whose presence is required and scheduled only for the duration of specific, named activities.

  • In the event that an announcement is made that NASA is shutdown and employees are furloughed, you will be expected to report to work only on a part-time basis.
  • You are required to report to work on the shutdown dayas declared by the agency (unless your supervisor has approved for you to complete your orderly shutdown by teleworking) and follow your supervisor’s instructions for an orderly shutdown.
  • Though you are Part-Time Excepted, you will receive an official furlough email notice in your nasa.gov e-mail during the orderly shutdown activities.
  • Please notify your supervisor of your receipt of the notice by email or by signed copy.
  • If you do not receive your notice, check your junk mailbox.

On-Call Excepted Status - employees who may be required and recalled to work at home or on site for emergencies (unscheduled).

  • In the event that an announcement is made that NASA is shutdown and employees are furloughed, you will be placed in a furlough (non-pay, non-duty) status after an orderly shutdown is completed. You may be contacted at any time to perform excepted activities on an as-needed basis.
  • You are required to report to work on the shutdown day declared by the agency(unless your supervisor has approved for you to complete your orderly shutdown by teleworking) and follow your supervisor’s instructions for shutdown activities.
  • Though you are On-Call Excepted, you will receive your official furlough email notice in your nasa.gov e-mail during the orderly shut-down period.
  • Please notify your supervisor of your receipt of the notice by email or signed copy.

  • In the event that an announcement is made that NASA is shutdown on Friday, February 9, 2018, and employees are furloughed, you will be placed in a furlough (non-pay, non-duty) status after an orderly shutdown is completed.
  • You are required to report to work on the shutdown day declared by the agency (unless your supervisor has approved for you to complete your orderly shutdown by teleworking) to follow your supervisor’s instructions for shutdown activities.
  • You will receive your official furlough email notice in your nasa.gov e-mail during the orderly shut-down period.
  • Please notify your supervisor of your receipt of the notice by email or by signed copy.

The agency will determine how to handle timesheets during a furlough period and you will be informed after the Center reopens.
  • If NASA has a need to recall you to work during the furlough, you will be contacted by your supervisor. Please ensure your supervisor has your current contact information. If called out of furlough status, you may track only time worked to perform excepted activities.
