General Manager – application information

Stopgap Dance Company creates inclusive productions with exceptional disabled and non-disabled dancers for national and international touring. Led by Artistic Director Lucy Bennett, the company receives core NPO funding from Arts Council England to devise and tour original dance productions, and the recent increase in NPO funding from financial year 2018/19 will enable the company to reinstate its trainee programme Sg2 to nurture the next generation of disabled dancers in UK. In order to manage the increased workload, the company is seeking a General Manager to support the management of the company.In the immediate future, the General Manager will also support The Executive Producer in completing the final draft of the business plan for the next 4 years of Arts Council England funding period.

Stopgap Dance Companyis particularly keen to receive applications from people who consider themselves to be in minority groups or be in disadvantaged circumstances. Salary: £28,000-£30,000 depending on experience for full-time work at 37.5 hours a week. Candidates may apply for this role as part-time (approximately 22.5 hours/3 days a week) with flexible working hours provided that s/he is committed delivering on the essential duties and responsibilities as listed below. This may be particularly attractive to those with dependents or other commitments.

Hours: Weekdays, flexible. Evening and weekend work may be required from time to time. Stopgap Dance Company operates a Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) system

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial management and administration

  • To liaise directly with the company Bookkeeper and the administrator to ensure robust financial systems and management
  • To prepare annual budgets and cash flow with the support of the Executive Producer
  • To update and report against company budgets as set by The Executive Producer
  • To update cash flow and report against forecast
  • To undertake finance updates with the ExecutiveProducer twice a month
  • To draft quarterly Management Accounts and other financial reports for monitoring by the Trustees
  • To ensure financial compliance with Companies House and the Charity Commission
  • To liaise with the company accountant on annual audit with the support of the Executive Producer
  • To liaise with the company accountant on annual Theatre Tax Relief with the support of the Executive Producer

Other Managerial and Operational Responsibilities

  • To be responsible for fortnightly Management Meetings
  • To be the first point of contact for the company in absence of The Executive Producer for both internal and external enquiries
  • To support the Executive Producer in creating the final draft of the Business Plan 2018-2022 and take responsibility over monitoring, reviewing it annually
  • To issue all contracts to in accordance with legal requirements and industry bodies such as Independent Theatre Council and Equity etc.
  • To take the lead on managing the company’s legal and statutory requirements and submissions
  • To take the lead on reporting and returns duties to Trustees, funders, HMRC, Companies House and the Charity Commissions with the support of the Executive Producer
  • To take the lead on monitoring company’s adherence to all policies such as Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding, Health and Safety and Data Protection, taking the lead on reviewing, updating and redrafting these as required
  • To liaise with Access to Work over reimbursement for support worker costs
  • To support project management of the company’s programmes such as, residencies, artist development schemes andperformances if deemed necessary during a busy period

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Marketing and Communications

  • To create and implementa year-round marketing plan to promote the company’s activities, contracting appropriate freelance support staff/agencies as and when required
  • To liaise with venues and agencies to promote the company’s touring and education programmes
  • To oversee the company’s communication activities through digital and print media
  • To maintain necessary databases for effective implementation of marketing and communications activities
  • To produce and maintain audience, participant and partner feedback and evaluation forms

Audience Development

  • To support the Executive Producer in creating and monitoring audience development initiatives, sustaining a good system in collecting
  • To support the Executive Producer to sustaining a good system to collect relevant data
  • To support the Executive Producer to analyse audience and participant data

Fundraising

  • To support the Executive Producer in compiling major funding applications
  • To take the lead on smaller funding applications for localised projects

Essential skills, qualities and experience

  • Enthusiasm for the company’s work and the arts
  • Good communication skillsboth written and spoken
  • Strong numeracy skills and an awareness/willingness to learn about financial management in the charitable sector
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills with attention to detail
  • The ability to self-motivate and prioritise
  • Enthusiasm for working in a team and looking out for colleagues
  • A proactive attitude to promoting diversity and inclusion across the sector
  • A positive outlook with a ‘can do’ attitude

Desirable skills and experience

  • Knowledge of marketing and communications
  • The ability to manage and motivate staff
  • Experience of using Sage
  • Five years of experience in arts management
