General Information that is helpful for all parents:

  1. With the stresses associate with college – especially the top universities – including tier one – comes the stress of high achievement at such high levels – drugs are extremely accessible – prescription drugs that their peers have in their possession – REFEERED TO AS STUDY DRUGS – show that about 30% of kids will take it and not understand the ramifications of schedule 2 drugs with a high potential for abuse both psychologically and physically addictive and are in the same grouping as cocaine…. Some kids feel it is like drinking a lot of coffee and not harmful. THE DISCUSSIONS MUST START NOW AT HOME.
  2. Express your disapproval of alcohol, tobacco and drug use, explain their risk factors – including the information just learned about Adderall and Vyvance.
  3. Model behaviors you would like them to see
  4. Even when they push you away… do not stop…they are listing more than you think.
  5. The state of Ohio has several programs that can help parents strt talking – if you talk early and often about the risks of drugs they are 50% less likely to use in the first place.
  6. It is important for all parents to know that EVERY child regardless is at risk for using substances, knowledge about drugs and conversations with children about the importance of non-use is important.
