Genealogical Gleanings from Attala County, Mississippi Newspapers

Contributor’s note- These had been cut out and pasted into a young girl’s scrapbook. When she added a date, I put it in, but sometimes she didn’t.

1888- Married- At the residence of W.N. Stuckey, on September 25, Rev. J.M. Dotson to Miss Bettie Herald, Rev. C.C. Gaddy officiating.

The bride is one of Attala’s most charming ladies, while the groom is a young minister of the Baptist denomination and commands the respect of all who know him. We extend to the happy couple a wish for their continued pleasures.

1888- Married- At the residence of the bride’s father, Mr. W.N. Stuckey, on yesterday evening, Miss Atossa Stuckey to Dr. S.L. Brister, Rev. W.P. Ratliff officiating.

The bride is one of Attala’s most accomplished and winsome young ladies and her conjugal vow lost to the society of young a favorite that the deserving groom may justly feel proud of.

The groom is a promising young physician located at Stafford in BolivarCounty, whither he went from this county.

They left on the evening passenger for their future home via of Memphis. May all their anticipation of pleasure bud into reality, and the burdens of life rest lightly on them.

Boyd- Harrison, At McCool, Miss on the 25th inst, Mr Ira Boyd to Miss Cherrie Harrison.

We congratulate Mr. Boyd on his choice of a life partner and hope for Miss Cherrie a realization of her brightest anticipations. To them both, a long life and a happy one.

Campbell-Boyd, by Rev. W.P. Ratliff, Miss Carrie Boyd of Hesterville, to W.A. Campbell of Winona. The ceremony taking place at the bride’s father.

We have known both parties to this nuptial consummation since childhood and rejoice in their happiness. The groom is a young businessman of Winona, with flattering prospects of a success which he richly deserves. His choice evinces his good judgment and taste and drawing this inestimable prize in life’s lottery is additional proof that he has been smiled upon by propitious fate.

The bride is the lovely and loveable daughter of Capt. J.M. Boyd of Hesterville. She is the charming illustration of “a perfect woman, nobly planned”.

Prosperity, health and happiness to them.

Married- At 11o’clock a.m. yesterday, at the residence of Mr W.N. Stuckey, the bride’s father, M.G. Campbell, of the Star, and Miss Antionette Stuckey were married,Rev. W.P. Ratliff performing the ceremony.

Immediately after their marriage the young couple left for Kosciusko, where the reception was given at the groom residence to a few friends, Mrs. P.D. Noah receiving guests. May this felicitous choice of the senior be but the initiation of a series of uninterrupted joys.

Pierce- Glass- At the residence Hon. F.M. Glass, the father of the bride, Mr Hugh H. Pierce, of Ethel, to miss Sallie K. Glass of Sallis, Rev. W.W. Williams performing the ceremony.

Attendants- J.D. Sims, Miss Annie Lashley, W.A. Lightfoot, Miss Linda Love, Dr. F.K. Mitchell, “Nannie” Sims, Lee Richardson, “Lennie” Glass.

A bountiful repast of luscious dainties was served to the assembled guests after the ceremony. The future home of the happy pair will be Ethel, where the groom has purchased a residence. A cup of joy to you.

Alexander- Thompson- At the residence of Hon. Jason Niles, father of the bride, Mr. J.N. Alexander to miss Sallie Thompson, Rev Dr. Alexander officiating.

They left on the evening passenger for New Orleans where they will spend a short time. May the future of this couple be a continuation of the auspicious circumstances under which they begin their new life.

At the residence of the bride’s mother near Ethel on the 13th inst, by Rev A.W. Langley, A.T. Middlebrook Esq. of Ethel to Miss S.C. Veasy, all of this county.

May this momentous epoch in their lives mark the beginning of a long life of happiness.

The Alter- Wasson- Reaves- At the residence of Dr. J.A. Wasson, Rev. A.W. Langley officiating, Mr. N.R. Wasson and Miss Mattie Reaves, all of this county.

1889 Mr. M.A. Bell was married to Miss Lilly Mc Whirter on the 21st inst. Rev. A.R. Hines officiating.

Much joy and happiness to them, and a long life of prosperity.

Married- Miss Minnie Hines, daughter of Rev. A.R. Hines of this county, was married on the 24th inst., to Mr. Jno Herod of Limestone County, Texas, Rev. W.P. Ratliff officiating.

The bride was one of Attala’s most winsome young ladies and in her marriage vow society has lost a jewel. The best wishes of the Star attend them in their western home for which they left on last Tuesday.

Married-At the home of her father, Mr. N.N. Sweat, at 4 o’clock p.m. on the 24th inst., Rev. H.R. Tucker officiating, Miss Sudie Sweat and Mr. Will M. Noah, of the Star.

After the ceremony, the happy couple, with friends and relatives of both parties, repaired to the home of Mr. P.D. Noah where an inviting feast was spead which was enjoyed to the good wishes of the wedded pair.

The bride is one of the fairest of Attala’s fair, with a sweetness of disposition and accomplishments that make her a jewel that the groom may well feel proud of.

The groom is a member of the Star editorial force with promise of rise in his chosen vocation.

May happiness and contentment ever be their lot.

Mr Ben Ratliff, of Walnut Grove, Miss. (LeakeCounty) was married to Mrs. S.A. Land of this county, on Sunday last, at the residence of Mrs. Land’s son, Mr. B.S. Moore, Rev. D.N. Foose, of this place performing the ceremony. The groom is a most esteemed and influential citizen of LeakeCounty, and his life’s mate is a most estimable and amiable lady, well qualified to bless his mature years. A long life to them.

Rev. J.A. Bowen was married on the 16th inst. At Rome, Ga., to Mrs Emma Horn. Bro. Bowen has many friends here to congratulate him.

Newsome- McCracken- At the church in Duncan, Miss. (Bolivar County), on Sunday June 16, by Rev. J.A. Randolph, Rev. J.D. Newsom of North Mississippi conference to Miss Lelia McCracken of Duncan, Miss.

The most brilliant wedding of the season took place in Kosciusko on Wednesday evening last, at 7:30 o’clock. The contracting parties were Mr. W.B. Pottss, one of our wealthiest businessmen and Miss Iley Coleman, the charming daughter of Mrs. M.C. Coleman, Rev. Dr. Alexander performing the ceremony in his usual impressive manner. The bridal pair left on a special car at 10 o’clock for a tour through northern and western cities, where they will spend several months.. May their trip be pleasant and their life happy throughout.

In this city on the 10th inst. At the residence of Mr Green Beauchamp, father of the bride, Rev J. x Howorth, of Beth Eden, Wixxx county, to Miss Emma Beauchamp, Rev E.L. McWilliams officiating. The groom is president of the BethEdenCollege, and is a young minister of talents and promise. The bride is much esteemed from her accomplishments and possessing unusual vigor of mind. We invoke the smiles of propitious fate for them.

Thompson- Gilliland- On Wednesday evening last at 8 o’clock at the residence of Mr. J.H. Gilliland, father of the bride, Mr N.O. Thompson was married to Miss Nela Gilliland, Rev. P.G. Sears performing the ceremony.

The groom is a successful businessman of capacity and popularity, the bride one of the fairest of our many fair daughters, and we hope that circumstances that now makes their life blissful is anticipation, will materialize into long and happy existence. 1890

At the residence of Mr. W.A. Morgan on the 15th inst. Mr G.C. Monroe was married to Miss Sallie Morgan, Rev J.E. Buck performing the ceremony. “Two souls with but a single thought, Two hearts that beat as one.”

At the residence of Mr. W.L. Musslewhite, on the 2nd inst. By Rev. J.M. Dotson, Mr. Jeff Musslewhite to Miss Dora Evans, both of this county.

The many friends of this happy young couple wish them a long life and abundant joy.

Wilson- Collins- At the residence of Dr. Collins, in the northern part of this county, on the xx inst. Mr. Pink Wilson was married to Miss Lu?a Collins.

The fair bride has many relatives and friends here who ??? in wishing them happiness.
