Course Description and Rationale

Competency in reading and writing is critical for success in both college and ministry. This course will provide the college student with a variety of strategies for reading and writing at the college level. Emphasis is on identifying the skills needed to be successful during the college experience.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

·  Identify your own learning style and be able to list strategies useful in writing and reading on the college level

·  Use a course syllabus to plan an effective study schedule, set goals, and map assignments

·  Apply various reading strategies to diverse reading assignments

·  Apply various composition strategies to diverse writing assignments

·  Identify your God-given strengths and explore various ways to use them for the Lord

Required Course Texts

CampusTool Kit—A Web based program (access code purchased through the bookstore).

“How to Graduate From College the Easy Way” (in the bookstore and goes with CampusToolKit)

“Godliness” by Jerry Bridges (in the bookstore)

Bible (if you need a Bible get a good study Bible such as the NIV or ESV with study helps)

CCU Planner (or equivalent)

Course Requirements – Attendance and Participation

You are expected to attend all class sessions and complete all required preparatory reading and assignments. In addition, you are expected to participate in class activities and discussions, to complete all in class and out of class writing assignments, and to complete a final project for evaluation.

Assignments

Assignments will be given daily which will include reading and writing assignments. A journal will be kept and turned in with the addition of a final project to be announced in class. All work must be turned in by Friday, August 28 by 4:00 to my office in order to pass the class.

Evaluation

You will be evaluated on your attendance and participation, completed assignments, a completed journal/notebook and a culminating project. You will receive a written evaluation from your instructor concerning your performance in this course. You will not receive a grade for this class (pass/fail only) but as conditionally accepted you must pass it!!

NOTE: Attendance and class participation/preparation will influence your evaluation. Due to the format of this class, late assignments are unacceptable. The course outline and assignments listed above are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances.

1.  Writing: Complete a personal reflection essay: Why did I choose to come to college now? Why did I come to CCU? What are my goals? What do I want to do with my degree? (1-2 pages, You may use first person) Due Tuesday.

2.  Read Concentration Study Skills Learning Module and Study Aids Study Skills Knowledge Module on Campus Toolkit

3.  Read “Godliness” Ch1, 2

4.  Print out course plans from Moodle or CampusWeb, bring to class on Tues

FINAL ASSIGNMENTS:

  1. Write a personal reflection essay about this course—what have you learned about yourself? What do you need to change? What do you need to keep doing? How can you be successful in college? (1-2 pages)
  2. Pick two of the virtues from “Godliness” Write a personal reflection essay about how these two virtues speak to you about your relationship with God. (1-2 pages)

Guidelines For All Written Work

1. All essays should be typed, double spaced in 12 pt font.

2. Work should be grammatically correct.

3. Journal exercises can be hand-written.

4. Name and dates should be on all work!!!

Journal/Final Notebook

Turn in a completed journal/notebook with copies of all assessments taken during this week, reflections assigned in class, original and corrected essays and Final Assignment—Due August 25.
