Gemin-i is a multi-award winning charity that uses IT and innovation to improve education around the world; an exciting social enterprise, led by a creative, energetic leadership team.

Our mission is to connect young people and schools around the world to share ideas and work together as global citizens for a safer, fairer future recognising the rights and cultures of all people.

We specialise in using technology to bring innovation to education, making it ever more interactive – to give a voice to those who rarely have one, allow them to exchange and collaborate with peers around the world, work for positive change in their lives and communities, and even raise their concerns with policy makers.

Our Internet communication forums, Rafi.ki ( and Kidogo ( provide imaginative online learning and teaching environments for children in secondary school and primary school age groups respectively. We CONNECT children and schools, allow them to LEARN about important issues, and then CHANGE or take action to create a more positive future.

Although the world is becoming increasingly more connected by the moment, real and meaningful engagement is not. Rafi.ki and Kidogo address this problem and nurture among young people the skills and inquisitiveness needed to be effective in a global environment.

Using these forums, over 2000 schools from 125 countries facilitate young people to connect and communicate so pupils can learn directly from each other and create friendships across continents. The community is growing all the time.

We offer an exciting and ever-changing collection of cross-curricular educational resources on topics such as Global Health, Environment and Peace and Conflict. Students engage with one another directly using fully moderated instant messaging, video conferencing and drag-and-drop page creation tools. A major recent development has been the creation of an upgraded platform that allows for much greater expansion and flexibility in the future.

We are funded from a variety of sources: grants and donations, fundraising events, subscription fees and increasingly from contracts with partner organisations who would like to use the potential of our Internet platforms to develop an exciting range of projects with young people.

Gemin-i has grown substantially in recent years but now has to adapt to the current difficult economic environment in which government funding will play a lesser role than previously. We have already increased the proportion of unrestricted income coming from subscriptions, partnerships and events and we plan to increase it further over the next two years in order to keep Gemin-i on a path of long-term growth.

Our vision is of young people throughout all nations experiencing and enjoying diversity, understanding global issues and growing as active world citizens; and Gemin-i serving that end as the lead provider worldwide of safe online learning communities for young people.
