2018 Scholarship Program Guidelines

The Gee Family Association Education Fund will award a number of scholarships each year. The Gee Family Association Education Fund Board of Directors will determine the number and amount of each scholarship available annually based on the funds available. The scholarship awards range from $500 to $2,000. Funds used will come from the interest accrued from the corpus of the Gee Family Association Education Fund invested in interest-bearing accounts that become endowed funds. Some scholarships may be funded directly by sponsors.

PURPOSE: To ensure the education of our youth beyond the high school level and others who are continuing their education dedicated toward community service.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be:

1.  of Asian descent,

2.  either a Student or Professional, such as a:

a.  graduating high school senior; or

b.  pursuing education beyond the high school level; or

c.  working and wishto pursue higher educationand/or leadership training.

3.  Have primary residence in the greater Houston area; and

a.  applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents

4.  Have a commitment toward providing leadership and service in the community.

5.  NEW: Recipients may receive a maximum of two (2) scholarships awarded by GFAEF. Any applications by the recipient after a second award will be disqualified.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The Scholarship Committee shall consider the following:

·  Purpose and use of the scholarship funds

·  Individual’s scholarship, leadership, civic and community involvement

·  Evidence of acceptance in an institution of higher learning or valid program

·  How the applicant and greater Houston community might benefit

·  Unique and extraordinary accomplishments

·  Completion and submission of required application materials

·  Clear indication of financial need may be considered

The Scholarship Committee shall determine the relative weight given to each criterion. Follow up by telephone or e-mail may occur for clarification.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE: The Board of Directors of the Gee Family Association Education Fund of Greater Houston will appoint the scholarship committee annually. These individuals are chosen from non-Gee family board members.

APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE: Applications and criteria will be disseminated to Gee Family Association members, local high schools, universities and community organizations during Winter 2017.

NOTIFICATION OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: Recipients will be notified in advance (generally two weeks prior; estimated by week of February 18, 2018) of the awarding ceremony, which takes place during the annual Gee Family Association Education Fund’s Chinese New Year Banquet, scheduled for Sunday, 6:00 pm. at Crown Seafood Restaurant, 10976 Bellaire Blvd, Houston, Texas 77072. Recipients are invited to attend as guests of the Gee Family Association. Additional dinner tickets are available for purchase. Details will be distributed to scholarship recipients.

REPORTING REQUIREMENT: Twelve months after receiving the scholarship award, recipients will submit a written report to the Board of Directors on how funds were used and how the greater Houston community benefited or will benefit. If the scholarship award is granted for continuing professional education or community leadership program, the recipient will also show evidence of completion of the program.
