GEAR UP UPDATES

  • Year 2 Reminders:See WAGU Year 2 Planning Workshop Presentations: Priority Schools and Cohort Schools. Review these instructions for completing and submittingYear 2 work plans/budgets prior to sending in your plan by Jun. 29.
  • Order Incentives. Orders are due Jun. 30. You may order up to 2 items per GU student. T-shirts do not count as one of these items. They must be used in 2018-19 school year. Items will be shipped to schools in mid-August. If you do not submit an order, supplies will be limited.
  • Current Form Reminder: In Jan. 2018, the mileage reimbursement rate changed to $.545 per mile. The amount has been updated on the Match Contribution of Goods and Services Form. Make sure you use the correct form by always going to to download the most current forms.
  • Attention High Schools: Sign Up Now to Be a 12th Year Campaign Site for 2018-19. Sites receive free printed resources, professional development opportunities, and more! Schools can learn more and sign up online.
  • GEAR UP West 2018.GUW will take place Oct. 14-16 in Boise. Review the travel guidance prior to making any travel arrangements.

OPTIONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • School Counselor Summer Institute.Technical assistance for K-12 counselors and other interested educators. Get info/updates on a variety of topics from the experts. Jun. 27, Spokane or Jun. 29, Olympia.
  • Social Emotional Learning Summit. For p-12 service providers, teachers, counselors, and administrators. The 2-day summit will focus on education that encompasses the whole child. Aug. 1-2, Pasco.
  • Fall Counselor Workshops.Locations vary. Dates throughout September.
  • Pave the Way Conference. It will focus on strategies to advance equity, increase college readiness, and broaden access to higher education in Washington State. Nov. 29, UW Seattle.
  • NCCEP/GEAR UP Capacity-Building Workshop. Designed to develop the skills, knowledge, and practices of GEAR UP leaders, practitioners, and partners. Feb. 10-13, San Antonio, TX.

  • The National Runaway Safeline. Get free materials including posters, bookmarks, brochures, and wallet cards with the crisis line number.FYI: Free Greyhound Tickets to Homeless Youth “Home Free” Program. The National Runaway Safeline and Greyhound offer free bus tickets to homeless and runaway youth (up to age 21) to reunite with their parents or guardian.

Cloud Scholarship / Evolve IP offers a $1,000 and a $500 scholarship open to incoming and current college students who have financial need and plan on a career in technology or computer science. Applicants must submit a completed application and provide some brief essay answers on a given topic related to technology. / 6/30
Poetry Contest / Open to all U.S. HS students. Applicant must submit an original poem with 20 lines or less. / 6/30
SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) Scholarships / For Latinx students interested in majoring in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or a related field. Proof of citizenship not required. / 6/30
SHPE Foundation Scholarship Program-Graduating HS Senior / For deserving Latinx HS graduating seniors, undergraduate students, & graduate students who demonstrate both significant motivation & aptitude for a career in STEM. Citizenship not required, but residency requirements vary. / 6/30
AWG Minority Scholarship / For African American, Hispanic, and American Indian women. Must be full-time students pursuing an undergraduate degree in the geosciences (geology, geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, meteorology, physical oceanography, planetary geology, or earth science education) at an accredited college or university. HS students who will enter one of these fields during their freshman year may also apply. / 6/30
Do-Over Scholarship / In 250 words or less submit a response to the question: "If you could get one 'do-over' in life, what would it be and why?" / 6/30
ZipRecruiter Scholarship / To enter, write a 500-800 word essay that addresses a job you previously held and your ideal post-grad job. / 6/30
Stuck At Prom Scholarship Contest / For the first time ever, Duck Brand’s Stuck at Prom will have two grand prize winners. Use your imagination to create Duck Tape prom fashions in either the “Dress” or “Tux” category for a chance to win $10,000! American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship Program--Second Chance Scholarship / Open to anyone who has graduated high school or equivalency and wants to pursue a college degree or trade school education. Scholarship winners are randomly selected by computer-generated drawing from among valid entries received at the conclusion of the contest period. / 8/30
