Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures in partnership with the Ministry of Innovation and Advanced Education is providing scholarships intended to enable academically superior graduate students to undertake full-time research education at an Alberta university, leading to a research-based Master’s or Doctoral degree.

The structure ofthe Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarshipprogram (GSS)is designed to connect scientific enabling platforms with strategically focused research areas. In Alberta, this means accelerating the development of the enabling platforms of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Nano, and Omics, in support of the application areas of Health, Bio-industries, Energy, and Environment.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Please use the following instructions and the attached document when submitting your Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship application. Submit all documents electronically.

  1. DEADLINE
  • Applications must be emailed to Athabasca University Faculty of Graduate Studies Officeon or before 4:00 pmMTonApril 20, 2015. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
  1. FORMAT
  • All information must be typed using a font size of Arial 10 or greater.
  • On all attached pages - margins must be minimum ½ inch.
  • Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
  • The maximum space allotted for required information is indicated in the applicable sections of the application form. Where applicable, text fields will expand to allow for additional pages to be filled out, or cut and pasted into the appropriate boxes.
  • Excess pages in addition to the application are not permitted and will be removed, except where specifically stated.
  • Failure to comply with these standards may result in the rejection of a proposal.
  1. COMPLETENESS OF APPLICATION
  • It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that the application package is COMPLETE and received by the Athabasca University Faculty of Graduate Studies Office on or before the deadline.
  • The Athabasca University Faculty of Graduate Studies Officewill assume no responsibility in following up with applicants who submit incomplete applications.
  • No supplemental information may be provided after the deadline.
  • Incomplete applications (including those lacking any of the required signatures) will not be considered.
  1. TRANSCRIPTS (Canadian and foreign)
  • The Faculty of Graduate Studies will access the student’s AU transcripts in the Registrar’s office.
  1. LETTERS OF REFERENCE
  • Applications must include two letters of reference.
  • One letter of reference from your supervisor (or potential supervisor) that speaks to the following points: suitability, peer group comparison, length of acquaintance. (If this is a potential supervisor, the letter should comment on the reasons for agreeing to supervise this student.) This letter should also comment on the applicant’s proposed research and its potential significance or impact.
  • One letter of reference from another faculty member or a supervisor from your previous institution must also be included. This letter should also comment on peer group comparison and length of acquaintance and provide enough of a detailed assessment of the candidate’s strengths in research to allow the reviewers to gain a sufficient knowledge of the applicant’s abilities.
  • Letters must reference applicant’s first name and last name.
  • The content of the reference letters is CONFIDENTIAL and should be provided to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by email directly from the referee.
  • Letters of reference being sent from other countries may be signed, scanned electronically and sent via email to . However, it remains the candidate’s responsibility to ensure that letters of reference are received by the deadline.

  • Information on the outcome of the application will be mailed to the candidate and the supervisor at the addresses provided in the application.
