UKIERI is a new initiative, which aims to create a 'step change' ineducational relations between India and the UK over the next five years, so that in the longer term the two countries become each other's partner of choice in education.

Aims

By strengthening institution to institution collaboration, and promoting stronger links to industry and related communities, UKIERI will lead ultimately to India and the UK becomingeach other's preferred education partner.

The UKIERI initiative will involve three strands:

1. Higher education

The main focus of the initiative is on higher education and, within this, promoting research links and partnerships betweencentres of excellence. A major impact is expected inareas of science, technology and the social sciences whichare crucial for the future of both countries and their place in the globalised and increasingly knowledge-based economy.A key component will be to encourage substantially more doctorate and post-doctorate collaboration between India and UK, through split PhDs, research fellowships and other mechanisms.

2. Schools

Activities in schools will also be an integral element of the initiative, bringing together clusters of schools in the UK and India for joint curriculum projects and professional development opportunities. It will be the first UK collaboration to reach significantly into the state sector in Indian schools, as well as building on and significantly expanding existing collaborations with private sector schools. UKIERI aims toreach half a million students through networks of teachers, head teachers, national educational bodies and government departments.

The initiative will provide a unique platform for the sharing of educational developments and reform, opportunities for dialogue and new networking. It will promote co-operation between the government funded schools' sector in India and UK schools for the first time through strategic partnerships bodies such as the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and local authorities in the UK and the NVS and KVS state school systems for disadvantaged but gifted children in India.Such links will address priorities for each government, fostering child-centred education and increasing internationalism in schools.

The school strand will complement the HE and Skills and trainingstrands of UKIERI by developing education research interest and opportunities, and participation of businesses in schools activities of interest, such asEnterprise education and Environmental studies.

3. Skillsand training

The initiative will also include activities devoted to a strengthening of professional and technical skills. Collaboration in this area will be led by industry partners. Linksbetween centres of vocational excellence in both countries, andopportunities for workforce development in areas of skills gaps identified by the business community will be developed. This strand will focus on developing skills for the financial services and creative industries sectors and other areas identified in collaboration with corporate partners.
