GBHC Selection Policy 2015/16

All players should be aware that selection will take place with the aim of improving the overall level of club hockey and providing the best level for them. It is assumed that Gosport Borough Hockey Club players will be willing to play for whichever team they are selected for.

Priority must be given to senior teams, whilst bearing in mind the needs of other teams, such as promotion and relegation chances. Captains should meet regularly and discuss with the relevant other captains, players’ abilities and proposed movements within the club structure. The Club Captain will oversee these meetings to act as an intermediary.

Movement within the teams should become an accepted part of selection and players should not expect to be guaranteed a place in a particular team. This should be borne in mind when players return from injury or other lengthy absences.

The selection committee will be made up of team Captains and Managers and chaired by the Club Captain. The Club Captain has the overall and final decision in the case where one cannot be made by team management.

If players are unavailable for particular matches due to the timing of the game then arrangements should be made for them to play in the next senior team, if at all possible. In the Ladies section this depends on player’s registration status.

Players who have not paid their annual subscription will not be considered for selection after the 1st November.
New players to the club should start at an appropriate level decided by the selection process.

If players are de-selected from a team then they should be selected for the next senior team. It is up to the Captain who de-selected the player to inform him/her of the decision and the reasons why it was taken. This must happen before the teamsheet is published. Captains should be positive and emphasize the strengths that the player can bring to their new team and areas where there is room for improvement.

Selection Procedure:

The selection panels will meet (or otherwise liaise) in line with the requirements indicated by the club in consultation with the Head Coaches.

Team selection will be drawn from the collated information on Member Availability displayed on Pitchero. Selection will be decided from the 1st XI Teams downwards. It is expected of players to acknowledge the need for the Club to put the requirements of its highest teams first. Quality of selection within higher teams should not be compromised to assist lower teams, in line with Hampshire League directives.

It is intended to confirm Team Selections by predetermined deadlines. Team selection confirmation will be posted as Team Sheets on Pitchero/ and by email. It is recognised that occasionally changes within teams may be required at short notice due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g. illness/injury). These changes will be handled by members of the selection panel and will be communicated with the individuals involved directly.

It is the clubs intention to take, whenever possible, a predetermined number of players to each game as a squad for each team.

Men’s Team / Squad Number / Ladies Team / Squad Number
Men’s 1st XI / 14-16 / Ladies 1st XI / 14-16
Men’s 2nd XI / 13-15 / Ladies 2nd XI / 13-15
Men’s 3rd XI / 13+ / Ladies 3rd XI / 13+

Selection meetings will take place once a week for the Mens and in three week cycles for the Ladies with teamsheets being issued on a weekly basis. Amendments may be made to team selection between meetings, following discussion between the relevant captains with the Club Captain to chair the meetings.

Each captain will pick a full team at selection.

Players should make captains aware of their availability the weekend prior to the selection meeting, or at the earliest possible time. This can be done through Pitchero.

It is advised that a submission of player’s availability should be made to the Club Captain on Tuesday’s ready for selections to be made and players informed by Wednesday’s before training on a Thursday (Subject to change depending on 1st XI Training Day allocation).

It should be recognised that Availability and Selection are not the same thing. Selection procedure can only begin once accurate information regarding player availability is gathered.

Captains should pick their best available team for each game. It is imperative that a representative from each team is present at selection.

Players are advised that failure to confirm availability through this medium, and in a timely manner, may mean that individual player risks missing out on selection for their regular team, or perhaps at all, on that date.
