SCHOOL-PARENT COMPACT

Garrett Elementary School and the parents of the students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by Title I, Part A of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (participating children), agree that this compact outlines how the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve the State’s high standards.

This school-parent compact is in effect during school year 2017-2018.

REQUIRED SCHOOL-PARENT COMPACT PROVISIONS

School Responsibilities

The Garrett Elementary School will:

  1. Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards as follows:

Garrett Elementary will provide high-quality curriculum and instruction by working collaboratively as a school and on grade level to plan for lessons and use what was learned through professional development to adjust instruction as needed through the use of research-based strategies and initiatives. Through the support of MPS, ARI, AMSTI, Alabama Best Practice Center and Leader in Me, our curriculum is supported.

  1. Hold parent-teacher conferences (at least annually in elementary schools) during which this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement. Specifically, those conferences will be held as follows:

Open-house and parent night will be conducted to share important information about students’ progress. Parent-teacher conferences will be available to all parents as needed by the parent’s request and by the teacher’s request. Parents of students on RTI will receive notices for meetings held to discuss their child’s progress and success plan. Appointments are made and requested on conference days and with teachers to meet about students’ progress during regular business hours, and before after school which is arranged through the office or the teacher.

  1. Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress. Specifically, the school will provide reports as follows:

Reports on student’s progress will be available daily by providing parents with the INow passwords to view student data, bi-weekly through signed-papers, mid-way through the nine weeks period through progress reports and at the end of each grading period through quarterly report cards showing students’ academic and behavior progress. A calendar goes home monthly to remind paents of these dates.

  1. Provide parents reasonable access to staff. Specifically, staff will be available for consultation with parents as follows:

Upon request and appointments, teachers and staff are readily available to meet to discuss student expectations, and progress of academics and behavior. When schedules permit, parents may speak with staff immediately.

Faculty & staff members are accessible through the MPS email accessed through the MPS school’s webpage. Parents may also call the school to leave a message for staff to return calls within a reasonable timeframe.

  1. Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and to observe classroom activities, as follows:

P.T.A and the school’s office will provide volunteer sign-up information. Each teacher provides opportunities within the classroom for parents to observe, volunteer, and participate in activities within the classroom or on field trips. Parents volunteer in the library, in the technology lab, as chaperones on field trips/school events and around the school as needed. However, a background check must be completed.

Parent Responsibilities

We, as parents, will support our children’s learning in the following ways:

  • Monitoring attendance and providing excuses when absent.
  • Making sure that homework is completed and academic and behavior logs are signed.
  • Monitor progress through items listed in #3.
  • Volunteering in my child’s classroom or school.
  • Participating, as appropriate, in decisions relating to my children’s education such as IEPs, RTI, and FBA’s.
  • Promoting positive use of my child’s extracurricular time and reinforcing school procedure in the Garrett Handbook and MPS Code of Student Behavior.
  • Staying informed about my child’s education and communicating with the school by promptly reading all notices from the school or the school district either received by my child or by mail and responding, as appropriate.
  • Serving, on applicable school-wide committees and teams to promote school improvement.

Student Responsibilities (revise as appropriate to grade level)

We, as students, will share the responsibility to improve our academic achievement and achieve the State’s high standards. Specifically, we will:

  • Do my school work and homework daily to the best of my ability.
  • Read at least 20 minutes every day outside of school time and access additional academic resources for assistance provided by my school.
  • Give to my parents or the adult who is responsible for my welfare all notices and information received by me from my school every day.
  • Recite and use the Garrett Creed and 7 Habits to drive my actions daily.
