GARLAND QUILT GUILD MEETING

February 3, 2009

Valerie Hubbard called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. January 24th board meeting was an amazing success.

Paula Hosieradvised minutes were in the guild news letter and a copy was available when each member arrived. She asked for any comments on the minutes of the January meeting. Michelle Wirth made the motion to approve the minutes and was seconded by Susan DeLarios.

Helle White gave the Treasurer’s report for January. As of the end of January we had a $4409.56 balance plus our CD.Barbara Brooks made the motion to approve the Treasurer’s report and was seconded by Sue Simon.

Valerie read the notes from the suggestion box:

1.Cannot hear the introduction of the visitors and new members.

2.Good smooth meeting with organization. Thanks.

Committee Reports:

Shop Hop – Barbara Cissne told us Quilt Mania II HOPon February 21 has 10 members signed up.

TAQG – Janet Gurleyreminded everyone about Rally Day, July 9th at MimosaBaptistChurch in Mesquite. The guest speaker will be Sharon Schamber.On July 7, 8, and 9 she will hold three workshops: French Country, Corded Binding, and Cotton Boll.Janet has the forms that must be filled out and received by March 15th.

The guild needs more mini quilts to give to TAQG for Rally Day. The maximum size is 24” x 24”. They are also accepting bags and other quilted items to auction. The raffle baskets this year will have a Rowenta Iron in them.

We still need tissues or money for tissues for the holders. A drawing for those who donated tissue holders, tissues, or money for tissues was held and the winner was Ann Petrie.

Janet is looking for volunteers to show quilts at Chambrel Assisted Livingon Thursday, February 19 at 2:00.

Community Service – Teresa Persell presented a 100 Quilt Goal Thermometer, challenging each guild member to make at least one donation quilt for community service. She announced the guild will support Scottish Rites, Garland Police Department, and SPCA of Garland. Kits will be available each month at the meetings. Just pick them up from her. There will be awards given out this year for the members who help support our community services.

Retreat – Helen Hogue -Our guild retreat at Compass Centre is May 28 thru 31, 2009. Rates are $74.20 per night, $148.40 for two nights, or $222.60 for three nights. The retreat is open to members and non-members. Non-members will pay $10.00 extra.

Barbara Cissne presented the Founder’s Spool Award to be awarded yearly. The deadline will be December and the award will be given in March of the following year. $100.00 gift and a plaque will be given.Barbarahanded out forms for members to start considering who they would like to nominate.

Block of the month – Denise Bartosh presented an interesting history of the Pin Wheel Block. There were 27 blocks this month. The winner of the drawing was Judy Williamson. Gay Spears presented next month’s block of the month , a Disappearing Nine Patch.

Valerie announced:

Allison Ray has the Web Site close to being up and running.

Marsha Meeksis working hard on the 501(c)(3) and has gathered information to obtain a tax-free status for the guild.

Requested we all remember to turn in your volunteer hours to Teresa Persell. She has forms at her table.

Remember to bring pancake mix and syrup for the Church.

Don’t forget next month to bring your Two-Block Quilt entry for Virginia’s President’s Challenge.

Sandra and Glenn Hardinwith Our Father’s Children’s Camp for Disabled Kids were set up to sell raffle tickets for their quilt.

UFO CONTEST – Virginia Hauerasked for all those who participated in the UFOChallenge last year to bring all the projects they had finished.Texas Quilt Works graciously donated gift certificates.Helen Hogue completed 10 projects and won 1st place and a $75.00 gift certificate. Michelle Wirth completed 9 projects and won 2nd place and a $50.00 gift certificate.

CORRECTION to last month’s minutes:Hope Kirk, who was not present at the January meeting, also was nominated as an Outstanding Volunteer for 2008.

Our speaker this month was Fran Snay.

We had Show and Tell. Door prizes were provided by Texas Quilt Works, Blue Ribbon Quilts, Quilter’s Connection, Quilt Country, Lone Star House of Quilts, Suzy’s Quilt Shop, Chili’s, Fran Snay, and Guild members.

The March meeting will feature the President's challenge. Remember to bring your two block quilts. There will be a prize for the President's choice and the People's choice..The quilt can be a top or quilted and bound. Mine is only a top.
