Garden Schedule

Maintenance and consistency are keys to a successful project. Weekly tasks for any project include weeding, watering, trash removal, and general maintenance. Vegetable gardens need consistent watering throughout the entire growing season. Depending on the size of your project, daily watering could take up to an hour each day. Use the attached calendar to describe how your group will maintain a yearly garden project.

The schedule is to be filled out and shared by your entire group.

Take the time to think out the growing season. Get the entire group together to think about site preparation and the year’s activities and events.

Summer break is always a difficult time for schools to maintain their garden project. ***Please attach a thorough explanation of how your garden project will be maintained over the summer.

What preparations are needed?

  • mulch or compost
  • advanced soil tests or tilling
  • overgrown areas in need of attention in the spring
  • meeting with teachers to agree on a schedule to be in the garden

Think about necessary gardening tasks and consider assignments:

  • collecting trash
  • weeding common areas
  • turning compost
  • keeping the garden tools safe and accessible
  • watering on a weekly basis in cool months and daily during hot spells
  • keeping all garden members on task
  • organizing events to gain school and community support
  • fundraising

Many youth gardens assign a class to a raised bed. This is a wonderful way to ensure that classes can claim a unique plot of their own. Remember that common areas will also need maintenance.

Alternate and share responsibilities: divvy up tasks so that one or two people are not doing the bulk of the maintenance in the shared garden areas. Make plans for the group to take part in professional development and garden training with GGI in order to complete your requirement. Be sure to be specific; write the names of group members next to their jobs. Please be sure to note actual weekly assignments for each teacher to spend time in the garden with his or her students, and have the teacher initial next to that assigned time. This is a grant requirement.
