Game #85 of 1234, 1st of 4 Game Series
Friday, April 24, 1959, Night Game
Chicago White Sox (6-4) VS Cleveland Indians (3-7) at Cleveland Municipal Stadium
Dick Donovan(R)(1-1)(3rd Start)(CHW) Vs Herb Score(L)(1-1)(3rd Start)(CLE)
In this replay, Chicago scored two runs in the top of the 2nd when Herb Score issued 3 of his game high 8 BB which the White Sox took advantage of by scoring 2 runs. They added 1 more in the 3rd as Jim Landis began the inning with a 3B8 and scored on Sherm Lollars DG6. By the end of 6 innings the White Sox had a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, Cleveland scored their first run as Rocky Colavito lead the inning off with a 2B to center (an ..8 reading off of the pitchers card with no control on Colavito’s card) and scored from third on a FC. The White Sox came right back in the top of the 8th by scoring 1 run, which removed Score from the game. Score gave up 6 earned runs in 7.2 innings and walked 8 batters while striking out 6. In the bottom of the 8th, down by 5, the Indians scored three runs on Colavito’s HR to CF scoring two runners ahead of him. That made the score 6-4 for the White Sox which was the final score of the game. Donavan picked up his 2nd win of the year and Score lost his 3rd game.

Game #86 of 1234, 2nd of 4 Game Series
Saturday, April 25, 1959, Day Game
Chicago White Sox (7-4) VS Cleveland Indians (3-8) at Cleveland Municipal Stadium
Barry Latman(R)(1-0)(2nd Start)(CHW) Vs Cal McLish(R)(0-2)(3rd Start)(CLE)
Billy Goodman, leading off for the White Sox started this game off a 1B7 hit off of Cleveland Starter Cal McLish. That set the tone for the rest of the inning as Nellie Fox followed with an L9 (BP ck was a HR to RF but Fox’s card converted the HR to a 1B8). That must have unnerved McLish because he walked the next three batters threw a WP and allowed 4 runs to score in the first inning. That was all the White Sox needed because Barry Latman was unhittable, throwing a 2 hit CG shutout as the White Sox beat the Indians 5-0, giving Latman his 2nd win of the year and a 0.52 ERA and a .155 OBA.

Game #87 of 1234, 3nd of 4 Game Series
Sunday, April 26, 1959, Day Game
1st game of double header
Chicago White Sox (8-4) VS Cleveland Indians (3-9) at Cleveland Municipal Stadium
Early Wynn(R)(2-1)(4th Start)(CHW) Vs Don Ferrarese(L)(1-0)(3rd Start)(CLE)
Just as in the previous two games in this series, the White Sox scored first in this the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. Luis Aparacio lead off with a TL7, stole 2nd and scored on Jim Landis 1B8 to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead after one inning. They repeated this again in the 3rd inning when Aparacio again singled to center, stole 2B and score on Landis’s single to RF. In the top of the 8th, the first two batters for the Sox were retired in a non descriptive manner, (foul out and fly out). Ray Boone then singled of off Ferrarese, and moved to second on the first pitch to Jim Rivera due to a WP. Rivera then drew a BB as did the following batter, Earl Battey. This prompted a pitching change for the Indians with Dick Brodowski replacing Ferrarese on the mound. Brodowski got Al Smith to ground out to 3b to end the inning. With the Indians down by two and Brodowski due up first, Tito Francona was called on to pinch hit. Early Wynn blew three fast balls past him for his 11th K of the game. He followed this up by fanning Jimmy Piersall, giving Piersall a 3-3, 3 K’s that is for the game. Vic Power drew a walk, Wynn’s fourth of the game. Minie Minoso singled. Next up is Rocky Colavito, 0-3 so far in the game. Wynn pitches and Colavito connects sending the ball over the center field fence for his 2nd HR of the year. Wynn then induced Russ Nixon to ground out to 2b. The White Sox enter the 9th behind by a run and facing Mike Garcia. Garcia wastes little time in retiring the three batters he faced and the Indians win by a 3-2 margin. Brodowski gets win, even though he faced only 1 batter, Garcia the save and despite pitching a 12k four hit game, Wynn the loss.

Game #88 of 1234, 4th of 4 Game Series
Sunday, April 26, 1959, Day Game
2nd game of double header
Chicago White Sox (8-5) VS Cleveland Indians (4-9) at Cleveland Municipal Stadium
Billy Pierce(L)(1-1)(3rd Start)(CHW) Vs Gary Bell(R)(2-1)(4th Start)(CLE)
The second game of the double header was a pitching duel between Billy Pierce and Gary Bell. Both pitchers going into the 9th inning with the score tied at 0-0. In the 9th, Chicago brought in Norm Cash as a pinch hitter for Billy Pierce to lead the inning off. Cash connected on 1 pitch for his 2nd HR of the season which gave the White Sox a 1-0 edge. Bell retired the next 3 of 4 batters he faced and Cleveland entered the bottom of the ninth down by 1. The White Sox brought in Turk Lown to pitch the ninth. The first batter he faced was Minnie Minoso who flew out the RF for the first out. The next batter was Colavito who had won the earlier game with a HR. Lown was careful, but not careful enough as Rocky lined into LC for a 2B. (a Ball Park chart L7 reading from Lown’s card which resulted in a 1B*7 reading with no control that rolled into a extra base hit). Facing a tough decision a conference was held on the mound (actually it was in the john because I knew I couldn’t wait any longer, especially if this might go into extra innings). It was decided to walk Strickland and pitch to Martin, even though Martin was 2-3 in the game. Both Colavito and Strickland were not the fleetest of foot (both in wait and see mode). The pitch to Martin, a 46 PB chance, but no, Lollar prevents the PB, check Lown’s 46 with runners on and the RH Martin batting, a DP2 and the game ends 1-0 on a beautiful 243 DP. (The 59 White Sox up the middle with Lollar, Fox, Aparicio and Landis field a 1(5)2 Lollar, 1 for both Fox and Aparicio and 1-2 for Landis)
