Greenway Rd / Dartmouth Rd junction Fatality

The GRA issued a statement which was published in the Herald Express recently, expressing our frustration with the lack of Council action over installing traffic lights at this junction and introducing a 30mph speed limit on this stretch of the Dartmouth Rd. (Details can be found on our website). This was the 2nd fatality in 6 months. We will continue to campaign hard on this issue. You may also want contact our Councillors and MPs to demand action if you agree and want to stop any more fatalities. (Ed- See Gazette Editorial for contact details).

The Common / Langdon Lane

We are exploring, with the Council, whether Pedestrian safety can be improved across the Common, adjacent to Langdon Lane. More news in next issue.

Planning Applications

The old sewerage works application has been withdrawn.

The “3 houses replacing one house planning application”, in Higher Warborough Rd, was apparently rejected by Torbay Planners.

Subscriptions Due

GRA membership Subscriptions (held at just £2 per household) are being collected door to door by our volunteers during October / November. Membership entitles voting at AGMs, you’ll be sent regular email news of issues affecting the village and be allowed to contribute to current issues.

A new GRA window sticker will be available soon, hopefully to be available to issue on payment of subscriptions, please display in a prominent position to show your support for GRA.

Can you help ?

We still need a Chairman, anyone interested in helping with this role, please contact Gordon Batten for more info.

We need volunteers to distribute newsletters, collect subs, and alert us to issues.

The next GRA meeting is 7:30 pm Wednesday 28th November at the Manor Inn. Anyone can attend.

Torbay Council Consultation:- Have your say on the Torbay Council Traffic Calming / Galmpton Gateways.

The GRA campaign for a 20MPH village speed limit has been previously rejected by Torbay Council, despite a 400 signature petition. Just two streets in Torbay have been designated 20mph in the last 10 years! Road safety is one of our major concerns; this is especially relevant following the two tragic fatalities at the Greenway Rd and Dartmouth Rd Junction, in the last 6 months.

Torbay Council have now suggested an alternative plan; the installation of six brand new “Traffic Calming Gateways” (see plan below) at the entrances to the village.

The Highways team at Torbay Council advise us ” The purpose of the gateways are to provide a visual change as you enter the area and the imprinted asphalt surfacing will have the appearance of granite sett (cobbled) paving and give a very slight vibration to cars driving over them. Unlike normal rumble strips however this layout should give very little noise problem although the properties immediately adjacent may notice a slight increase in road noise during quiet periods such as late evenings”

The proposed locations are:-

Village Entrances :-

·  Langdon Lane /Common, existing location of “Galmpton” signs

·  Nr Junction of Dartmouth Rd / Manor Vale Rd (Near house no.1)

·  Nr Junction of Dartmouth Rd / (Top of) Greenway Rd

·  Stoke Gabriel Rd (Before houses numbered 100 & 102)

·  Greenway Rd/Greenway Park Junction

Village centre locations :-

·  Manor Vale Rd, just before Orchard Close

We don’t feel that this proposal will be as effective as 20MPH restrictions.

We would welcome Galmpton Residents comments on this proposal before we feedback to the Council.

-Do you wish to support this plan?

-Do you believe this solution is effective in reducing speed ?

-Would you like any alternative scheme to be considered (eg: flashing “Slow down” sign’s traffic calming, etc)

Please email any comments/concerns to :
