Job title:GALFA Marketing and Communications Officer

Reporting to: Dr Ruth McNair, GALFA Chairperson, with presentations to the GALFA Board and working with a Marketing and Communicationsworking-group.

The Opportunity:A fixed contract position for the new role of Marketing and Communications Officerfor 8 hours per week for a 2-year period, with hours of work flexible and as mutually agreed. Some meeting engagements and travel outside the 9am to 5pm Monday-Friday time-frame will be required. The position is open to either an individual professional marketing and communications officeror a marketing and communications firm who could deploy a mix of people to meet the various roles required.

Salary / Remuneration:Contract rate of $62 per hour ($500 per 8hr week), Total package $48,000 over 2 years (i.e. on average 1 day per week, for 48 weeks per year, for 2 years)

Location:Melbourne based, the Contractor will work from their own home or office and provide their own phone, computer and associated equipment (as GALFA does not have a premises). Travel is required within Melbourne and likely to be required to rural locations in Victoria occasionally. Agreed costs will be reimbursed.

About GALFA:

Since our first grant in 2010, GALFA has been successful in raising limited funds from the LGBTIQ community and working with mainstream philanthropy in co-funding model.Some thirteen projects with high impact for LGBTI people have now been funded, using a social-change model of philanthropy to address our identified priority areas.

To increase donations and bequests there is a need to promote a culture and practice of philanthropy in the Victorian LGBTI community, and this requires an expert approach to understanding the methods and strategies that would work best. Purpose of the position:

The purpose of this position is to improve the capacity of GALFA to build philanthropic fund raising donations and bequests specifically from and for the LGBTIQ communities of Victoria. This role may be fulfilled by an individual or a team of people. The Marketing and Communications Officer role willbe largely self-managing with regular reporting to the GALFA Chair, presentations to the Board, and engagement with a volunteer based Working Group. The role shall assist the GALFA Board and selected volunteers to:

  1. raise awareness of GALFA as the premier and effective Victorian LGBTI philanthropic organization in the LGBTI and broader communities
  2. understand the motivators driving philanthropic donations, especially in the Victorian LGBTIQ community
  3. prepare content for written and virtual publications
  4. build knowledge, culture and practice of philanthropy by LGBTI Victorians, friends and allies, through effective engagement strategies with individuals, organisations and social, LGBTI and mainstream media
  5. improve their skills in awareness raising and targeting fundraising opportunities for LGBTI philanthropy in Victoria.
  6. improve the level of regular donations and bequests to sustain GALFA’s impactful LGBTI granting program by engagement with the LGBTI community and legal firms and trustee organisations.

Key responsibilities & duties:

Organise two events in Victoria to raise awareness of GALFA / 5% / Event management

Prepare information pack and engage with legal and trustee organisations / 5% / Writing and communication skills
Evaluate the impact and reach of the marketing plan / 15% / Evaluation skills including ability to record findings
Regular communication with the GALFA Chair and presentations to the Board / 5% / Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
Work collaboratively with LGBTIQ+ organisations and fundraising in the communities to enhance philanthropic giving. / Included above / Self-motivation, collaborative and team skills

Selection criteria:

Mandatory:

1. Tertiary qualification in marketing, public relations, journalism or a related field, or, equivalent demonstration of industry experience and achievement.

2. Extensive experience in planning and managing publicity and marketing campaigns, with at least 2 years post qualification work, and preferably in philanthropy.

3. Previous experience in media relations and a track record in securing media coverage.

4. Experience in online communications including: developing, implementing and monitoring online strategies, working in traditional and contemporary digital media and maintaining websites.

5. Demonstrated ability to work independently and flexibly, as well as cooperatively as part of a team.

6. Demonstrated ability to communicate with stakeholders, organise work, manage time, determine priorities and meet deadlines.

Desirable:

  1. Experience working in the LGBTI communities, either paid or as a volunteer
  2. Experience or knowledge of philanthropy
