Course Description

Welcome to 5th grade math. I am looking forward to an exciting and rewarding learning experience with you and your child. This year, we will be piloting math activities from Eureka Math (the old Engage NY).

Throughout the year we will be working on: place value with whole numbers and decimals; multiplying whole numbers; division with greater numbers; measurement; graphing; fractions (+/-/x/dividing) with like and unlike denominators; add/subtract decimals; multiplying and dividing decimals; geometric shapes; perimeter; area; circumference; percents; probability; ratios

Student Expectations

Supplies

Students will need a spiral notebook, two-pocket folder for homework, pencils, high-lighter, and erasers.

Grading Scale

A = 93-100 B+ = 87-89 C+ = 77-79 D+ = 67-69

A- = 90-92 B = 83-86 C = 73-76 D = 63-66

B- = 80-82 C- = 70-72 D- = 60-62

E = 59 and below

Grade will be calculated from a combination of tests/quizzes (60%), daily assignments (30%), and homework (10%).

Homework

Students will need to practice his/her multiplication flash cards every night. In addition, I will be assigning homework problems. These will come from their student packets for each math module. Please read your child’s planner for the assigned problems.

Homework will be corrected in class. Students are expected to be prepared on a daily basis. Late assignments are accepted for maximum points when a student has an excused absence. Please encourage your child to be prepared for class each day.

Extra Help

I am available and happy to provide extra support. Students may seek additional help during seminar. Please encourage your child to ask for help when needed.
