Galen Master Series 2014-2015 a Report on Last Year’s Series at the

Helene Galen Performing Arts Center at RMHS

Managed by:

Louisa Castrodale, Arts Coordinator PSUSD

Master Classes are hands-on, project-based classes and performances designed to teach and challenge students to master core concepts by applying them to contemporary experiences in today’s performance and musical industries. These classes require students to watch and listen as the master takes one or multiple students at a time. Classes are integrally tied to anecdotesabout acomposer, producer, director or performer, demonstrations of how to play or perform certain passages, and indications of common technical errors

Each Master Class focuses on a specific discipline and draws significant input from the professional community via interaction with the student and at times the audience. With these substantial projects and practitioner involvement, Master Classes provide students with aunique bridge between high school classes and real-world practice. Aspiring musicians and performers, and their teachers, typically consider master classes to be one of the most effective means of musical development, along withcompetitions, examinations, and practice. Last year was our pilot year for a Galen Master Series in the Arts. Each of the classes was set up to include band, choir, theater, MTU students, and dance.
