Please note: Every library’s GVRL collection will vary as the library chooses what eBooks appear in it so your results will vary. The examples below are best for a GVRL collection with a wide variety of eBook titles.

How would you help the following students and teachers find the information they need?

List the steps that you used to locate the information in the spaces provided below.

  1. An eighth grade student looking for a biographical profile on holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel.

Basic Search - WEISEL

  1. A student on the high school debate team preparing for a debate on sexual harassment who needs both topical and statistical information.

Basic Search – SEXUAL HARASSMENT – use the Document Type filter on the search results page to limit to Topic Overview

  1. A science teacher who wants to find an image of a roundworm.

Advanced Search – ROUNDWORM as search term in Image Caption

  1. A history teacher has asked the media specialist for information on an important Supreme Court Case. Identify a history title from the list of sources in this category that would contain this information, and then link to the information utilizing the title’s table of contents.

This answer will depend on your library’s collection but a good example would be Supreme Court Drama: Cases That Changed America.

  1. A science teacher planning a lesson on the structure of matter wants to find examples of real-life application to put the topic in perspective for his students; he believes the information can be found in a title called Science of Everyday Things.

Choose the eBook from the home page and use the search within title box to search for MATTER.

  1. A technology teacher who wants reference information about how video games are made. This teacher also would like to visit websites with associated information on this topic.

Basic Search – VIDEO GAMES

  1. A high school student in an economics class is looking for business information about Chipotle, a popular Mexican Grill restaurant chain. In particular, this student would like to know the year and place the first Chipotle was founded in addition to who Chipotle’s competitors are.

Basic search – CHIPOTLE, most any reference article will mention founding information.

  1. A student writing a book report looking for a plot summary for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “Tender is the Night”.

Basic Search – “TENDER IS THE NIGHT” and use the Document Type filter on the search results page to limit to Plot Summary.
