Biography

G. Richard Hastings was named Saint Luke's Health System's Chief Executive Officer in 1996, after serving as chief operating officer and chief executive officer of Saint Luke's Hospital and in executive officer roles with the Saint Luke's Health System. Hastings began at Saint Luke's Hospital as an administrative resident in 1977. He served in the United States Air Force in numerous operational positions and received a Bronze Star for service in Southeast Asia.

Hastings is a preceptor for the University of Minnesota's Health Care Administration Program. Hastings holds a master's degree in business administration from ChapmanUniversity in Orange, Calif., and a master's degree in hospital and health care administration from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

Mr. Hastings professional distinctions include being ranked by Modern Healthcare magazine in 2004 as 19th and in 2005 as 24th on the list of the 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare; He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (2001 recipient of the Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Regent’s Award); a recipient of Health Information Management Systems Society’s 2004 CEO IT Achievement Award; serves on the boards of the Jackson County Sports Authority, The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce (past chair), Midwest Research Institute Board of Trustees, Harry J. Lloyd Charitable Trust, Midwest Center for Holocaust Education, Voluntary Hospitals of America (VHA), Missouri Hospital Association (past chair), Healthcare Services Group (past chair), Health Alliance of Mid America (past chair), Excellence in Missouri Foundation, and the Hospital Data Institute (past chair). In addition, Hastings is a member of the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City and the Rotary Club and was the 2001 recipient of the Human Relations Award from the Jewish Community Relations Bureau/American Jewish Committee.

He serves as Chairman of the Building Committee for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Building Committee of the First Baptist Church of Raytown, and is the former Chairman of the 2004 Heart of America Billy Graham Crusade. He has authored publications in the field of healthcare, financial, and product line management, and currently serves on the faculty of the graduate program in health care administration at WashingtonUniversity in St. Louis, MO. He has been a featured speaker on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award for numerous groups, including the Mayo Board of Governors in Scottsdale, AZ; AHA National Leadership Summit in San Diego, CA; ASQ Quality Institute for Healthcare Conference in New Orleans, LA; University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management in Minneapolis, MN; JCAHO Conference on Quality and Patient Safety in Chicago, IL; and VA Organizational Excellence Symposium and Award Program in Washington, D.C. Mr. Hastings has also spoken at the Phi Kappa Phi Centennial Celebration in New Orleans; George K. Baum in Colorado Springs; the Health Trustee Institute in Cleveland, Ohio; the Sixth Annual Symposium on Integrated Healthcare in Colorado Springs; and presented a product line seminar at the National Institute of Financial Managers.

Hastings and his wife Judy have two grown children. Their hobbies include traveling throughout Israeland biblical studies; Mr. Hastings also enjoys playing golf.
