March 2011

Dear Friends

The forthcoming season of Lent, beginning on Ash Wednesday (9th March), affords us all an opportunity to examine and prepare ourselves for the Passion and Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, in order that we might be fully ready to celebrate His sacrifice and ultimate victory for us.

This year, we have a further opportunity to look at ourselves, as we will be visited by members of Presbytery as part of the Quinquennial Visitation scheme. Members of the team will be meeting with the Congregational Board and Kirk Session, and the convenor of the team, the Revd. Carol Ann Parker of Fraserburgh: West will be preaching in Fyvie at our morning worship on Sunday 27th March. I hope there will be a good turnout to welcome her to our congregation.

We also have an opportunity to appoint members to represent the congregation on the Congregational Board at our Stated Annual Meeting, which will be held after our worship on Sunday 13th March.

The following Sunday (20th March) we join with Rothienorman to celebrate “Souper Sunday” in aservice which will be conducted by elders and members of the congregations, following which there will be a soup and sweet lunch, in aid of the Church of Scotland HIV/Aids Project. That service will be at 11.00 a.m., and if anyone requires transport, please approach any of the elders, or add your name to the list in the Vestibule.

Looking at ourselves, let us take the opportunities which are presented to us as individuals and as God’s people to go forward in faith, able to rejoice and play our part fully in celebrating and witnessing to the wonder of Easter.

Yours

Ian Thorburn

Fabric Committee

This group is made up of Board members who meet to discussmattersrelating to the fabric of the Church properties. They get estimates for works, then put proposals to the Congregational Board. If the proposals are passed, work is carried out. Owing to financial restraints no major works are taking place presently.A recent survey of the windows showed that although most are in good condition one requires a repair at a cost of nearly£4000.This will be carried out when funds are available. They are also getting advice on how to improve the heating system.Other urgent tasks are- the provision of ramps leading to the Church and Manse;a loop system for Glebe House;ongoing decoration within the Church;flooring and lighting in the vestibule. The list goes on.Members of the Committee who would be delighted to hear your views are Rev.I.Thorburn,L.Rennie,D.Eddie,C.Riach,J.Fisher,A.Clark,W.Smith, J.Mackenzie.Dr A.Taylor,

Fyvie Woman’s Group

The December meeting went ahead as planned despite the weather and a great time was had by all who made it on the night. For our January meeting, Lindy Duncan gave a very interesting and entertaining talk on her collection of religious artefacts and manuscripts. Our February meeting on the 23rd was a fun taster evening of Dru Yoga. Our March meeting on the 30th will take the form of a talk on stained glass by Jennifer Jane. All our meetings take place in Glebe House, starting at 7.30pm, and refreshments are served. All will be made most welcome. For more details, contact Sue Hogg on 01651 891663

Christian Aid

The monthly stall selling Fairtrade goods in the Church, with profits going to Christian Aid continues, and in 2010, this raised £193, so thanks to all who support this. The new spring and summer Traidcraft catalogue is now available, so if you would like a copy please let me know.

Christian Aid Week is in May as usual, which is not that far away now, and I hope to organise a fundraising event around that time.

Any queries, please get in touch. Audrey Clark, Tel 01651 891729

Guild Report

Unfortunately our Annual Christmas Fayre was one of the many events cancelled due to December’s snow, despite our attempts to re-schedule it.The weather in January was kinder to us and we were able to go ahead with our Celebration meal.We enjoyed an excellent meal followed by entertainment provided by Margaret Cassie and her friend Irene with songs accompanied by harp, fiddle and recorder.

Kenny Thompson from Kintore Rotary Club came along in February and told us of their support and organisation for Shelter Box.This is a scheme that provides emergency shelter and equipment following natural and other disasters worldwide.

We now look forward to our March meeting when Heather Nunn will talk about her rare breed hens. That is followed by the World Day of Prayer on March 4th at Auchterless church.

Our Annual Coffee Morning will be held on Saturday 2nd April in Glebe House from 10am -11.30 am.We end our session with the A.G.M. and Tea Party on the 6th April.

Awarm welcome is extended to anyone who would like to come along to any of our events.

Footnote

As you may have noticed an article on the work of the Fabric committee has been included in this issue. It gives us some idea of the mammoth task it is to maintain the Church in its present condition and I’m sure we are all grateful to the Committee for their efforts.
