The Lower Yukon School District will use these funds, in combination with State and local funds, to replace the Hooper Bay School, which suffers from several health and safety conditions and is poorly located near the village sewage lagoon. The school serves approximately 400 Alaska Native children.

Funds will help the Lower Kuskokwim School District to replace the Toksook Bay Elementary School, which has several emergency conditions that make it unsuitable for repair. Approximately 190 Alaska Native students attend the Toksook Bay Elementary School. Grants for the Kwethluk, Napaskiak, and Tuntutuliak Schools will be used to implement new water filtration systems to correct elevated levels of arsenic and organics in the existing water supply. Together these four schools serve approximately 450 Alaska Native children.
