CFDA: 84.041C

DINE SW High School

P.O. Box 303

Winslow, AZ 86047

Project Director:Paul Spitzer

(928)779-2623

Funding:$800,000

The DINE Southwest High School serves approximately 40 children on the Navajo reservation. Without this school, children must reside in dormitories or commute more than four hours to school every day. The proposed project will demolish the existing school facility with numerous life safety issues and replace it with a new 5,000 square foot instructional space. The current facility, a converted residential space, lacks proper lighting and ventilation and life safety code compliance, and contains a failing plumbing system and deteriorated flooring. The new structure will provide instructional space, a kitchen, and common area.

Ft. Thomas Unified School District #7

P.O. Box 300

Fort Thomas, AZ 85536

Project Director:Cheryl Miller

(928) 485-9423

Funding:$2,618,120 (S041C100020)

$ 393,279 (S041C100021)

The Ft. Thomas School District serves primarily students from the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. Within the district, the Bylas community, which is located on the reservation, had been without a school since the 1960’s until the recent construction of the Mt. Turnball Academy, which opened in 2008. The original plan was to expand the school; however, the school was built on unstable soil and was exposed to environmental contaminants from the nearby train traffic. This project will construct a multi-purpose building that will serve as a cafeteria, performance center, gymnasium, and assembly hall adjacent to the relocated Mt. Turnball Academy.

The second project will replace the roof on the Ft. Thomas High School, which was completed in 1925. The current facility experiences frequent leaks in the roof and associated health safety issues related to mold and water infiltration. The Ft. Thomas Unified School District will use these funds to replace the roof and repair any related interior damage at the Ft. Thomas High School.

Red Mesa Unified School District

H.C. 61, Box 40

Teec Nos Pos, AZ 86514

Project Director:CW Payne

(602) 881-0228

Funding:$1,336,399

The Red Mesa Unified School District educates approximately 1,000 students from the Navajo Reservation. The proposed project will partially fund an addition/renovation to the current cafeteria facility. Unsanitary conditions and limited space have become an imminent issue that is affecting the health, safety and well-being of students and staff. The current building does not meet ADA guidelines and has no restrooms. It also needs new doors and windows, upgraded utility systems and a fire suppression system.

Hays Lodge Pole District #50

P.O. Box 110, Highway 66

Hays, MT 59527

Project Director:Violet Crasco

(406) 673-3121

Funding:$991,702

The existing facility, Hays Lodge Pole High School, enrolls 100 children from the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation and has many health and safety issues including inadequate electrical systems, asbestos, faulty roofing systems, and lack of accessibility for individuals with disabilities. This project will bring restrooms, instructional and administrative areas into ADA compliance as well as remove the asbestos, repair the leaking roof, and repair the backup generator and transfer switch.

Lame Deer School District #6

P.O. Box 96

Lame Deer, MT 59043

Project Director:Bryan Kott

(406) 477-6305

Funding:$4,230,128

The Lame Deer School District educates nearly 350 students within the boundaries of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. The existing elementary school is vulnerable to a number of emergency conditions, including: fire, flooding, roof leaks, mold infiltration, poor ventilation, and the threat of structural collapse. The proposed project would fund Phase I of the elementary school reconstruction. The subsequent phases will be completed with state school construction funds.

Minnewaukan Public School District

200 D Avenue, P.O. Box 348

Minnewaukan, ND 58351-0348

Project Director:Myron A. Jury

(701) 473-5306

Funding:$6,000,000

The Minnewaukan School District serves over 200 students, most of whom are Native American in grades preschool through 12. The single school building is located near the persistently rising Devils Lake, which will likely render the school unusable in the near future as the water levels continue to grow. Originally located nine miles from the lake, the school is now 130 feet from the water’s edge. This project will build a new school in a more suitable location.

Solen School District

902 East Broadway

Solen, ND 58570-0128

Project Director:Judy L. Zins

(701) 445-3331

Funding:$215,000.00

The Cannon Ball Elementary School is located in the Solen School District and serves approximately 115 children from the Standing Rock Reservation. This project will replace the roof over the instructional areas and administrative offices in the middle section and North Addition of the educational facility. In addition, the project will replace an outdated HVAC system that is not providing adequate air exchange.
