Futures Unlimited is an educational eventfor eighth grade girls showcasing academic fields and professional careers in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). In order to ensure the day is fun and educational, but also safe and organized, we ask for your help. Below are some suggestions we hope you will review and share with your students prior to the event as well as the bus ride to the event.We look forward to your participation!

Chaperones:

Please hand Bus Driver orange paper with driving instructions.

Please share the information below with your students while on the bus.

Drop-off is in Parking Lot D. Enter the building through door #20. Look for the FUTURES Unlimited sign above entrance.

Oakton personnel will be available to assist once you have entered the building. Proceed to the check-in tables where student and chaperone schedules and name tags will be distributed.

At the end of the session, when the speakers ask for questions, feel free toinitiate a question to spark a dialog.

To share with your students:

Some schools have had success by reading the below information to the students while on the bus traveling to the event.

DO….

Stay with assigned groups. (Girls will be split up after lunch and may not be with their friends.)

Follow expected school rules.

Ask questions of professional role models and workshop presenters.

Be a polite listener (Please remind your students that the professionals have volunteeredtime away from their busy schedules to share information with the students).

Clean up after yourself – food, papers, etc.

DON’T…

Wander off. Oakton guides will assist you in finding your room locations.

Text, talk or be disrespectful to presenters or volunteers.

  • How did you become interested in this field?
  • At what types of places have you worked?
  • What degrees/certificates does your job require?
  • What do you foresee as future trends in your field?
  • What advice do you have for a student interested in this career?
  • What are the most rewarding parts of your job?
  • What are the most challenging parts of your job?
