Background information on the College and Academic Office

St Anne’s College

St Anne’s is a modern, informal, academically ambitious College and is one of the largest in the University. It is known for its domestic setting and the diversity of its student body. It is an energetic and friendly co-educational community of some 730 students plus tutors and staff.

St Anne’s has a radical tradition. It can trace its origins back to 1879, and the formation of the Association for the Education of Women in Oxford. It became a College in 1952 and first admitted men in 1979. The College has always set its face outwards towards the world, driven by its commitment to making accessible the opportunities of an Oxford education to those of academic potential who otherwise might not encounter them. The College has over 422 undergraduate students and, in recent years, has built up its graduate community to around 308. It has a small endowment, and relies on its successful vacation conference business and upon the generosity of its large and committed alumnae base to secure its financial stability. He/she will negotiate, develop and maintain effective working relationships with partner institutions. The post offers an exciting opportunity for someone who has business and entrepreneurial skills, is highly organised and adept at managing projects and who at the same time can command credibility in the academic environment in which these programmes exist. The post is designed to fit an average 18.25hours per week, to be calculated on an annualised basis, and the post-holder will be required to work flexibly in order to meet deadlines. The role is designed to be self-funding by the beginning of year two, which means that for the second and subsequent years, the post-holder will be required to generate sufficient new income to cover at least the cost of his/her salary.

The programmes

Academic Summer Schools

St Anne’s has for the last three years held a one-week International Summer School in Asia: in 2014 and 2016 these took place in Hong Kong and in 2015 in Malaysia. These summer schools have been aimed at students of secondary school age who are interested in studying at Oxford or another university. The schools have typically attracted about 170 participants and have in all years been funded by private donations. The college is now exploring the possibility of running another summer school in Asia on a similar basis and/or on a semi-self-financing basis.

St Anne’s is also looking to develop an annual self-sustainable academic summer school in Oxford. This summer school will be aimed at secondary school participants who are interested in studying in Oxford or elsewhere and are attracted to spending a week in St Anne’s in the summer to immerse themselves in Oxford and get a taste of subjects offered at university. This summer school will be run on a fee paying basis using the facilities available at St Anne’s.

The post-holder will take a lead role in driving these projects forward, taking responsibility for the development, planning and running of these summer schools, both overseas and in Oxford. He/she will create the structure, coordinate the recruitment of teachers and students, and manage the events. Considerable time of the post-holder will be devoted to the development and management of the academic summer schools in Oxford, which is a new venture for the College.

Summer Schools run by other providers

St Anne’s also hosts summer schools run by other providers in Oxford. The Director will ensure that these summer schools run on a viable basis for the College, and design and negotiate improvements to the pricing structure where appropriate.

Incubators

St Anne’s has for the first time in 2016 run an Incubator programme to encourage and support students interested in entrepreneurship who wish to develop their own business ideas. The post-holder will oversee and manage this programme, which it is hoped will be run again in future years.

Internships

St Anne’s works with several partner organisations to provide a growing number of internships for its students. These internships provide invaluable experience for students to take their learning into the world beyond academic study. The post-holder will take a lead in coordinating the current internship programmes (which include those funded by the Danson Foundation, Stifel Bank, the Eurex/Deutsche Börse Group, A Year in Japan, Mitsubishi Research Institute), and develop and manage new internship programmes.

Visiting Student Programme

This programme brings about 35 students to St Anne’s from other academic institutions each year. The post holder will be responsible for assisting the Senior Tutor and the Treasurer in managing the relationships with partner Universities and developing new relationships to ensure the sustainability of the programme.

Outreach programmes

The College has a well developed outreach and schools liaison programme to support its aim to encourage and offer opportunity to all those who have the potential to study at Oxford. The post-holder will assist the college both strategically and operationally in continuing to evolve its offering so that the College remains true to its aims and is agile and responsive to changing political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors.
