  • Is the franchise making money?
  • How many players are on the roster?
  • What is the salary range?
  • How many other people work for the franchise?
  • What are the ways this franchise makes money?
  • How old is the stadium or arena?
  • Give some interesting information about the team.
  • Draw conclusions based on your research as to how the franchise will do financially in the next couple of years.

You have 2 days to compile the information and develop the PowerPoint presentation. You will be assigned a slot for giving your presentation.

Team 2 – Entertainment Venue – (2-3 students)

Instructions: Your team is to determine the costs of owning and running a major event venue. The venue you will research is ______. Create a PowerPoint presentation on your venue. Answer the following questions.

  • Who owns the venue?
  • How long has this person or company owned this venue
  • What is the name of the venue, is it named after the owner or a sponsor
  • If it is named after a sponsor, what did the sponsor have to do to have the venue named after them?
  • What types of events take place at this venue?
  • Are there any groups that this venue is “home” to?
  • What types of concessions and merchandise outlets are available at the venue?
  • How does the venue make money?
  • What does it cost to advertise or sponsor in the venue?
  • What are the seat price ranges? Do they vary per event? How do they vary?
  • Are there any special boxes or seats that cost a lot more than regular seats? What are the prices and what amenities come with those boxes or seats?
  • How many people work for the venue?
  • What is the percentage of time it is used or rented?
  • Try to find the economic impact the venue has on the local area.
  • What are some things the venue owners/managers could do during a economic downturn to increase revenues/events?
  • What are some interesting things you found out about this venue in your research?
  • Draw some conclusions based on your research as to how well this venue will do financially in the next couple of years.

Team 3 – Professional Athletes (2-3 students)

Your team is to research professional athletes. Research football, baseball and basketball. Create a PowerPoint on the salaries and benefits of professional athletes. Answer the following questions in your presentation.

  • Find out what the salary ranges are for professionals.
  • Find out how many people actually make it to the pros compared to the number of people that play the sport in high school.
  • Find out the average length of time a person actually plays the sport in the pros.
  • Find out what the lifetime take-home salary is for these players, from the bottom players to the top players.
  • How many top players are there that make the millions of dollars we hear about?
  • Find out the terms of their contracts, what happens if they get hurt or start playing poorly? Do they still get the millions they signed for?
  • What happens to the athletes when they leave the pros? What types of jobs do they have?
  • Draw some conclusions based on your research as to how likely it is for a high school player to make it to the pros and as to how likely it is for someone to make the “big bucks” and be rich by playing ball.

Team 4 – Professional Entertainers (3-4 students)

Your team is to research professional entertainers. Create a PowerPoint on the salaries and benefits of professional entertainers. Answer the following questions in your presentation.

  • Find out what the salary ranges are for the various types of entertainers.
  • Find out how many people actually are able to make a living off of being an entertainer and what type of entertainment they provide.
  • Find out the average length of time a person actually is able to make a living entertaining.
  • Find out what the average lifetime take-home salary is for entertainers, from the bottom entertainers to the top entertainers.
  • How many top entertainers are there that make the millions of dollars we hear about?
  • How many people go to New York or Los Angeles every year chasing their dream? How many of them make it?
  • If they do get work, how often do they work? What type of work do they usually end up doing to make a living?
  • What happens to the entertainers when they no longer can get enough work to support themselves? What types of jobs do they have?
  • Draw some conclusions based on your research as to how likely it is for a high school student to make it in show business or entertainment and as to how likely it is for someone to make the “big bucks” and be rich by being an entertainer.
