Fundamentals of Accounting
Self-Paced
Prerequisites:
Admission into the MBA, MSM, or MSHRM graduate program. Other prerequisites may vary by year. Students should refer to a current catalog or seek the advice of an advisor.
Description
A survey of fundamental theories, concepts, principles, and practices in financial and managerial accounting that provides a foundation for further study in graduate accounting and business courses. This course is self paced, with minimal instructor involvement and offered only online. Students must earn at least a grade of 80 on the final comprehensive exam to satisfy the CPC requirements in Accounting.
Objectives
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- List and describe the components ofbalance sheets and income and cash flow statements.
- Describe how business transactions affect financial-accounting statements.
- List and describe basic business operating characteristics and cost terms, and explain how cost behavior and measurement are used in decision-making in organizations.
- Use accounting information in strategic planning, budgeting, evaluation, and control.
- Show how computer spreadsheets and applications are used to assist managers in planning, implementing, and controlling.
Purpose:
To provide a survey of accounting concepts for the MBA program. Required for MBA students who lack a business, accounting, or business-related degree from a school holding specialized accreditation for their business programs

Procedure:
This course is self-paced. Students will have access to a customized, online textbook upon registration for the course. Students will review a textbook chapter or section and any suggested material, prepare the online self-assessment quizzes and/or exams, and make an informed decision regarding their ability to proceed with successive chapters.
Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on their retention of and successful communication of the material covered in the course. When the self-paced coursework is completed, students will take a final, comprehensive examination covering all material in the course. The final comprehensive examination will be proctored and will be taken online at a location chosen by the student and approved by the university.
Grading and Weights:
Students must successful complete the final examination. Successful completion is a grade 0f 80% or above. Grades will be assigned on the following scale:

There is no absence policy in this course.

Students in self-paced courses may or may not experience technical or other disruptions to their study schedules. Or, students may experience technical or other difficulties when taking the proctored exam. Late or IncompleteWork Policy:
The comprehensive, proctored, final examination must be completed by the end of the term for which the course is registered or the student must request an incomplete. The incomplete must be resolved early in the next term. Beginning and ending dates for each Term are published in the online Academic Catalog.
Assignments:
There are no assignments that must be turned in for grading or review by the instructor for this course. All assignments are self-graded and self-reviewed. (Note that the proctored, comprehensive, final exam is not considered an “assignment.”)
Academic Misconduct:
It is expected and required that students will conform to the strictest standards of integrity while enrolled in coursework at Troy University. Students can refer to the online student handbook, The Oracle, for information regarding acceptable standards of conduct.
Plagiarism:
As this is a self-paced course with a proctored, comprehensive, final examination, the University criteria for plagiarism does not strictly apply. However, students may want to refer to The Oracle and/or online syllabi for more information regarding what plagiarism is, how it can be avoided, and the consequences of non-avoidance.
Assignments and Schedule:
The assignments and schedule are determined by students in this self-paced course. During the first week of the courses, students should scan the text to get a very good idea of what is covered. Students should then prepare a “Study Schedule” showing all chapters and the dates the chapters will be studied. Students should adhere to their schedule unless very unusual circumstances intervene as self-discipline and consistency are key ingredients to success in self-paced courses.
