Environmental Requirements for Trout

Temperature

  • ideal range = 58-64 ºF (14-18ºC)

pH

  • ideal range = 7.5 – 9

Dissolved Oxygen

  • minimum threshold = 5 ppm

Water Chemistry

  • TDS generally high
  • high Ca good for forming fish eggs and bones
  • toxic metals (e.g. arsenic) should be low

Water Depth and Velocity

  • Spawning: good flow, but less than 0.5 m/sec
  • Rearing: mix of low flow pools and riffles (1:1 ratio)
  • 0.18m minimum depth

Substrate

  • Spawning: clean gravel, 1-15 cm diameter; 20% fine sediment; low siltation
