RESEARCH GRANTS

Sponsored

(1)2016-2019 "Coastal infrastructure planning for the promotion of marine conservation along the Israeli Mediterranean Sea". 180,000 NIS. Israel Ministry of Infrastructure, Energy and Water.

I designed this study to examine enclosures (usually to protect security-sensitive infrastructure) located along the Israeli Mediterranean coast, and their contribution to ecosystem viability. I will research the extent to which these areas serve as "de facto" marine protected areas. Using a marine ecosystem modeling application (ECOSIM with ECOPATH), research results will aim to improve planning of marine infrastructure to support multi-purpose goals, including various aspects marine protection, principally biodiversity and healthy ecosystem functions.

(2)2015-2019 "Advancing marine conservation in the European and contiguous seas (MarCons)", COST Action 15121. Member, Management Committee. € 2 million European Union Horizon 2020.

The Action aims to improve science about marine conservation in the European Seas. It will consolidate a network of scientists and stakeholders involved in marine conservation in European and contiguous seas, promote collaboration, and reduce redundancy of research efforts in conservation science and practice. It will advance the science of integrated conservation planning, promote regional coordination and transboundary conservation, propose specific conservation actions, account for climatic change and provide guidance for assessing governance issues to make marine spatially managed areas as effective as possible.

(3)2015-19 “Water-Sensitive Urban Design: Best Practices and Beyond”

Co-Principal Investigator with Prof. Tali Alon-Moses, Prof. Naomi Carmon and Prof. Elissa Rosenberg. $100,000 Jewish National Fund

Stormwater management practices are an important element of Water Sensitive Cities. This project examines both policy and physical in-the-field implementation of stormwater management practices in Israel through case study research. The objectives are to review and empirically evaluate the implementation of selected SW management practices. The evaluation will lead to recommendations for Best Management Practices (BMPs) tailored to various scales of planning (i.e., onsite, cluster, neighborhood, city, and metropolitan) and to specific geographic regions within Israel.

(4)2014-17“Marine Spatial Policy Plan for the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)”

Co-Principal Investigator with Prof. Shamay Assif of the Technion Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning,$1.2 million.Yad HaNadiv Foundation.

This project will complete a marine spatial planning process to develop policyfor the conservation and development of Israel’s Mediterranean Sea marine area of the country, including its EEZ. Steps include: a) conducting a prioritizing process with stakeholderand expert involvement that will provide standards for effective stewardship of Israel’s Mediterranean Sea waters; b) identifying management tools that will emphasize ecosystem health and wise use of marine and coastal resources; and c) proposing policy that reflects the importance of the Mediterranean Sea waters and marine area for all Israelis.

(5)2013-15“Ecosystem services (ES) assessment from the mountain to the sea: A multi-disciplinary method for defining ecosystem service indicators across landscape units”. Co-Principal Investigator with Asst. Prof. Daniel Orenstein. NIS 150,000 Israel Ministry of the Environment.

This applied research develops a methodology for the assessment of ES along a transect (from the Carmel to the extent of Israel territorial Mediterranean Sea waters). The use of ES indicators appropriate for three landscape units along the transect (marine, coastal, terrestrial) and product functions for each indicator allows identification of tradeoffs in services expected according to scenarios. The method’s final product consists of GIS-generated maps which allow the assessment of ES changes across the relevant land- and sea-scape units that informsdecision-making for planning.

(6)2010-15“Design and Management of Marine Reserve Networks (DEMARN)”.

Principal Investigator. €100,000. Marie Curie Program of European Union, FP7. Principal Investigator at Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at the Technion ̶ ̶ Israel Institute of Technology. (Note: Re-evaluation of the grant occurred March 2011-March 2013).

I initiated this research to identifyfactors that are frequently left out of the decision-making process for marine protected area (MPA) design and management. The research compares spatial outcomes generated by the use of spatial conservation prioritization methods used in common decision-support tools (e.g., simulated annealing and optimization algorithms) and those actually advanced in planning institutions and by MPA managers.

(7)2008-09“The Connection between Fisheries Resources and Spatial Land Use Change”

Co-Principal Investigator (with Senior Scientist Dr. Di Jin). $120,000 Funded by Cooperative Institute on Climate and Ocean Researchat Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

This study examined interactions between targeted fish populations, aspects of the fishing industry and communities in New England using parcel level data and geographic information system (GIS) tools.

2014 “Adapting to Coastal Adaptation: Making Climate Change Adaptation a Reality in Coastal Areas” RECEIVED APPROVED FOR FUNDING

Co-Principal Investigator (with Prof. Dr. Athanasios Vafeidis of the Coastal Risks and Sea-Level Rise Research Group of the Institute of Geography at Christian Albrechts University, Kiel Germany and the “Future Ocean” Excellence Cluster – GEOMAR). €150,000 for the Israeli team (the total €300,000). German – Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development (GIF).

Proposed to assess coastal vulnerability and potential impacts due to climate effects at two case study locations (in Germany and Israel) together with perceptions and readiness to address these changes. For combined bio-physical ad socio-economic assessment will be used to identify vulnerable communities and a combination of demographic data and survey techniques will be used to assess socio-economic variables, risk perception and social capital. Results will provide Israeli and German policymakers with valuable tools for coastal adaptation.
