BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING

Monday, September 12, 2016 - 6:00 P.M.

High School Library

The Board of Education meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairperson, Stan Kramer.

Members present were Phil Kramer, Don Tiesler, Stan Kramer, Linda Lund, Tom Klein and Jason Appel. Absent was Theane Pagel. Others present were Superintendent Luther Onken, Dayton Westra, Kayla Westra and Jerry Johnson.

Motion by Linda Lund, seconded by Phil Kramer to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried.

Motion by Tom Klein, seconded by Don Tiesler to approve the Consent Agenda, which included the following items: Minutes from Regular Board Meeting August 8, 2016 and special board meeting August 18, 2016 Bills, Activity Fund Report and Financial Reports. Approved/Acknowledged Open Enrollment Requests – Mercie, Harris and Mejia. Approved Band, After-Prom and Jr. Class Fundraisers. Approved Lane Changes for Lynn, Morgan, Curry and Lee. Approved contract for Paraprofessionals – Jill Madison, Cathy Salentiny and Emma Boomgaarden. Approved contract for extra-curricular employees. Motion carried.

Open Forum

Kayla Westra spoke about communicating information with parents on new policies regarding time in computer labs or library.

Community Ed

§  Pool closed for open swim until lifeguards can be hired

§  Updated program offerings

Mr. Pagel’s Report

§  Presented class numbers

§  Open house had great attendance

§  Highlighted upcoming activities

§  Outlined daily schedule

§  Learn pads outdated and non-functional, purchased 30 Chrome Books in their place

Mr. Slaathaug’s Report

§  Presented Class Numbers

§  Open House was a success

§  Had good in-service speakers on mental health and Special Ed procedures

§  Doing informal staff evaluations and discussed goals

§  Homecoming week starts Sept. 12th

§  Day to day business is running smoothly

Mr. Onken’s Report

§  MSBA meeting in Worthington for Board members

§  Looking into updating lighting to LED lights in gym

§  May need to pair with another district for football in 2018-19 and 2019-20. Possibly long-term

Congratulations to 2016 Homecoming Court

Old Business

Heard third and final reading of mandatory MSBA policies. Will be put online and in master policy manual. Motion by Tom Klein, seconded by Linda Lund to approve policies. Motion carried.

New Business

Motion by Tom Klein, seconded by Linda Lund to approve of certification of the preliminary 2016 tax levy payable in 2017. Motion carried.

Motion by Linda Lund, seconded by Don Tiesler to approve setting truth in taxation hearing for Monday Dec. 12, 2016 at 6:05 pm in the High School Library. Motion carried.

Acknowledged Aid Anticipation Certificates - $745,000 @ 1.2%

Motion by Phil Kramer, seconded by Don Tiesler to approve proposal from Murray County Soccer Club for Facilities Usage. Motion carried.
