Dear Father Ryder

The focused inspection in English and information and communications technology (ICT) highlighted the following strengths:
- the good quality of the work observed in the majority of classes; the good relationships between the children and teachers;
- the caring and hard-working staff;
- the contribution made by the non-teaching staff.
The inspection identified the need for improvement in the following key areas:
- the need for the staff to work more closely together;
- the need to promote greater consistency in the planning for learning;
- the need to establish effective procedures and practices to support the programme for those children who have difficulties with their learning;
- to agree and implement a marking policy; and
- to develop further the procedures for monitoring and evaluating the quality of provision and the standards the children achieve.
The Education and Training Inspectorate carried out a follow-up inspection on 6December2000.
The followingare the most important improvements since the focused inspection:
- the school has now in place a Special Needs Register, a policy for special needs, and screening and diagnostic testing to enable Education Plans to be created;
- the teachers have begun to work together in planning for learning, with an emphasis on identifying learning outcomes. Key Stage 1 (KS1) and KS2 staff are working together to ensure continuity and progress in the children’s experiences;
- the school has now an agreed marking policy in place.
The school has made good progress in addressing the key areas for action. The parentscan have confidence in the school’s commitment to improvementand the effectiveness of its action in response to the findings of the focused inspection.
