Vegetables: Supplies on offer met a moderate demand.

  • The traditional suppliers of onions to Russia are the Ukraine and Poland but due to the geo political tensions in the region and the ban on EU imports these onions will have to be sold elsewhere. Traders are concerned about the impact that will have on the internal European market. Dutch red onions sold in the range €6.00-€7.00/10 Kg and Spanish large sized at €8.00-€9.00 per 20 Kg.
  • Variable rainfall during the summer months has led to erratic supplies of domestically produced cauliflower and broccoli and the deficit is being made up with supplies of brassicas coming from Germany and the U.K. Excellent quality German cauliflower traded at €10.50-€11.50 per count of 8, U.K. iced broccoli was trading at €10.00/ 4.5 Kg.
  • Irish and Dutch courgette supplies were tight and values remained firm, trading inthe range €12.00-€14.00 per 5 Kg.
  • Small volumes of good quality new season Brussels sprouts arrived on the market and met a steady demand at €6.50 per 10x450g.
  • Tomato supplies were tighter and prices increased. Dutch round tomatoes traded at €10.00 per 6 Kg compared to €6.00 in week 35.
  • Irish and U.K. celery easedback slightly in value to trade at €6.50 per dozen.
  • Red and yellow peppers met a steady demand at increased values, trading at €10.50-€11.50/ 5 Kg. Green peppers eased back slightly to trade at €7.50/5 Kg.
  • Dutch and Irish cucumbers moved out steadily at €7.00 per 12/14.

Potatoes: Plentiful supplies met a fair demand.

  • New season Rooster traded in the range €3.00-€4.00 per 10 Kg.
  • British Queens were trading at €2.50/10 Kg.
  • Harvesting of Kerr’s Pink has commenced and traders are expecting supplies to increase from next week on.
  • U.K. Markies and Maris Piper for the chipping trade sold at €7.00-€8.00 per 25 Kg.

Fruit: Supplies fluctuated for good supplies on offer.

  • Excellent quality new season culinaryapples have come on stream. Traders believe that the warm spring months gave trees a great blossom and combined with adequate rainfall and heat has produced fruit of good size and skin colour.Bramley’s Seedling from Ireland and N Ireland traded at €7.00-€8.00 /13.6 Kg.
  • New season Frenchapples dominated supplies. Golden Delicious was the best performing variety on offer, count 100 traded at €18.00/18 Kg. According to the world association of manufacturers of pears and apples (WAPA) the yield from Golden Delicious is up 2 % on the 2013 harvest and is expected to reach 2.60 million tonnes which is estimated to be 22% of the apple harvest in the EU.
  • A deficit of lemons worldwide due to poor weather during the growing season has pushed prices on a steep upward curve in recent weeks. Argentinian lemons traded at €41.00-€43.00/ 15 Kg.
  • Increased sales of bananas coincided with the re-opening of schools after the summer holidays.

Flowers Supplies on offer met a fair demand.

  • The price ofroses increased to €1.75cent per stem compared to €1.40 in week 35.
  • Chrysanthemums and Lilies moved out well at unchanged values.
