Subject: [AGS] Hometown History Patch for GS

Dear Mary and others,

The Hometown History Patch Program from the History Channel is a wonderful

program. You can find the description of the program and suggested

activities, as well as printable scrapbook pages from the four areas at the

following site:

http://www.historychannel.com/classroom/

The capsule description is as follows:

"Hometown History" is an exciting community program that links Girl Scouts of

the USA with senior citizens and local historical organizations for fun,

educational activities. Sponsored by The History Channel and your local cable

operator, "Hometown History" gives Girl Scouts a chance to explore the past

in their own communities through oral history, architectural history, and

neighborhood history. Upon completion of one activity, a Girl Scout will be

entitled to a special "Hometown History" interest patch ...

The History Channel is happy to answer any questions you might have about

"Hometown History." If you need more help finding sources for "Hometown

History" projects, please call Lourdes Gamez 212-210-9780. "

We did this program as a Service Unit event two or three years ago. We did

at least one activity from the four program areas, Hidden Heroines, Oral

History, Buildings in Time, and Neighborhoods in Time. We set up the program

through our local Historical Park and all activties were done on site. We

did this as a Women's History month event in March and the girls invited a

significant female adult in their lives (we had Moms, Grandmas, Aunts, older

sisters, etc participate) to share the day with them. Lourdes sent is us a

scrapbook, patch and certificate for each girl. She also made arrangements

for our local cable company to become involved and they gave us special

t-shirts for all the girls. If you plan to do a large scale event for 50 or

more girls and you give them a few weeks notice, you may request the

t-shirts.

If you are doing this with just your troop they will send you just the number

of scrapbooks and patches and certificates that you need. The materials were

free.

The program materials are geared toward Juniors and up.

Enjoy,

:) Pat Broe, Senior Troop 290, Massachusetts
