Freshman Career Presentations - Friday, March 10, 2017

RBHS is in need of volunteers for our Freshman Career Presentations. We are hoping you will volunteer to participate in this great experience. Your assistance is greatlyneeded and appreciated.

We are asking current and retired business persons to give a 15-20 minute presentation to our freshman students. The goal is to offer each period of freshman (generally 50-60 students) with 2 career presenters, which means you would be teamed with another presenter.

Presenters will give a brief introduction on their occupation/current job and then focus most of their presentation on their occupational/employment journey. Many of our students feel they must have an occupational goal selected prior to graduation. Even though we all agree this is very beneficial, reality indicates most students will leave high school unsure of their future path. By sharing your journey, you will provide the students with evidence that not everyone follows a straight path into their occupation.

Suggested topics regarding “your journey”:

1)Did you have a career goal in high school? If yes, what?

2)What did you do to prepare for a career while in high school? (Classes, work experience, advance college placement, personal experience, nothing...)

3)What did you do directly after high school? (Work, school, military, travel, marriage, start a family, nothing…)

4)Summarize your experiences from the time you left high school until you entered your current career/occupation.

i)How many jobs have you had since leaving high school?

(a)How many did you love/hate?

ii)Summarize your educational/training experiences.

(a)Did you go to college/trade school/military/learn on the job?

(b)What is your opinion of your training opportunities?

(c)Do you wish you would have taken a different route? Why? What other route?

5)Share some of the challenges you have faced on “your journey”, the sacrifices, living situations, reasons you changed career direction, etc. (If appropriate and you are comfortable sharing personal information.)

6)How did you decided on the career in which you are presently employed?

7)You can bring visual aids if desired. A computer and projection screen will be available if you would like to demonstrate a website or other information.
