Goals of the Institute:

1) To provide teachers of French with a 72-hour French immersion experience which is both informative and enjoyable where they can use their knowledge of the language to communicate with other adults about topics of interest in French and, by doing so, improve their communicative skills.

2) To provide teachers of French with updated information about La Francophonie, resources and materials available for teachers, and pedagogical techniques that can enrich their instruction.

Monday, June 30

Orientation

4:00 pm Full-immersion participants arrive at Georgetown University, check-in, and unpack.

5:30-7:00 Short safety session. Swearing-in ceremony, introductions, and general orientation and agenda discussion for all participants.

7:00-8:30 Buffet Dinner

Tuesday, July 1 – Embassy of France

8:00-9:00 Breakfast and morning briefing

9:00-9:30 Walk to Embassy

9:30– 12:30: Tour of the Embassy. Mme. Catherine Petillion, Attache for Educational Affairs: Embassy Resources for Teachers of French in the U.S.

1:30– 5:00 Dr. Marcel LaVergne: Focus on La Francophonie

Presentation on introducing content and materials on Francophone countries in the classroom by Dr. Marcel LaVergne.

Wednesday, July 2

8:30-9:30 Breakfast in Building ICC, Room 450

9:30-1:00 Workshop with Marcel LaVergne on developing lessons on La Francophonie. Participants will work in small groups to develop lessons. Many materials will be provided. In addition a computer lab can be used for internet research.

1:15 Leave for National Gallery (taxis)

1:30- 3:15 Lunch at National Gallery – cafeteria, espresso bar, or café

3:20 Be at the West Wing Rotunda by 3:20

3:30-4:30 Tour of the French collection of the National Gallery West Wing with Mme. Lee,

4:30-6:30 National Gallery closes at 5:00. Return to GU or explore Smithsonian Folklife Festival on

mall.

7:00 Dinner at Dr. Keatley’s house with embassy staff and French speakers from D.C. area, 3109

Cathedral Ave., NW, Washington, DC, 20008. (All participants welcome.) Dress is business

casual. We will give directions and accompany participants.

Thursday, July 3

8:30 Check out of dorms. Suitcases can be left in safe location.

8:30-9:00 Breakfast, ICC Room 450

9:00-10:00 Final preparation of lesson presentations

10:00-11:30 Lesson presentations from small groups and feedback.

11:30-12:00 Presentation of Certificates of Participation

Remember suitcases and backpacks cannot be taken into any Washington museum.

Presenter:

Marcel LaVergne, Ed.D., the former K-12 Director of Foreign Languages in the Needham, Massachusetts Public Schools, has taught French at the high school and college levels. Co-author of the Scott Foresman French textbooks for high school use, he was a professor of Foreign Language and Second Language Methodology at Boston University, Tufts University, and Framingham State College. He has been a presenter of many workshops in foreign language teaching methodology and has published articles in professional journals. He is currently an active contributor to the NCLRC’s Culture Club.
