Fremantle Port on show for Maritime Day

A colourful spectacle and huge array of marine-themed activities will greet visitors to Fremantle Ports Maritime Day at Victoria Quay on Saturday 4 November.

This fun family day will cater for wide-ranging interests, withaction and displays throughout Victoria Quay’s west end and on the water.

Fremantle Ports’ Manager External Affairs, Ainslie de Vos, describes Maritime Day as a greatchance to experience aspects of maritime industryand enjoy free entertainment.

“Partnering with the Company of Master Mariners WA andwith outstanding support from the port community, Fremantle Ports has developed this event to become the largest of its kind in Australia,” she said.

The Royal Australian Navy will have extensive shore displaysand a submarine HMAS Waller quayside. Other vessels will include the refuelling ship Vacamonte,Svitzer and TAMS Group tugs, a river dredging barge, STSLeeuwin and Fremantle Ports’ emergency response boat.

There will be guided walking tours,free harbour boat ridesand Australian Border Force will have its detector dogs in action.

Outdoor displays will include a huge LNG tanker, vintage and classic vehicles,model ships, prime movers, and surf lifesaving and marine safety equipment.

Professional photographers will explain how to take stunning photos and visitors who post images to Instagram will be in the running for a $200 voucher.

Activities for the young includeinteractive art with Art Collective and craft with artist Angela Rossen, face painting and quizzes. Children arriving as pirates, mermaids, sailors or sea creatures can take part in a dress-up parade at noon.

Schools will provide musical entertainment and fashion shows and marching bands will perform regularly. Maritime Day favourites will include Fremantle Ports’ photographic display, a Navy and STS Leeuwin cook off at noon and Fremantle Sailing Club’s Fremantle Harbour Classic yacht race starting at 1pm.

The WA Maritime Museum (gold coin entry) has Roman-themed activities involving craft and digital animation.
