Steve Wright

writer

Freelance writer (9/2004-present). Some clients hire me for individual projects, others for extended on-site contracts. I have experience in a wide variety of industries, including but not limited to healthcare, pharma, energy, retail, tourism, business-to-business, fast food, tech, museums, motorcycles and education. I've written everything from annual reports and direct mail campaigns to hotel key cards, and my work has received dozens of regional and national honors, including The One Show, CA, Print and the Dinosaur Foot award.

Senior Copywriter, iostudio (8/2011-3/2012) Worked on U.S. military accounts, a gun store, Nossi College of Art, Red Kap and other VF Imagewear brands, a couple new-business pitches and some fun internal projects. Responsibilities included concepting campaigns, writing copy of course, and making client presentations.

Creative Director, GCG (3/2000-9/2004) I served as department head for a 10-person team of writers, art directors and production folks. During my time there, GCG grew into the premier creative shop in the market. We produced some smart, effective campaigns for a wide variety of clients, ranging from energy to healthcare & pharma, from butt paste to a world-class art museum. My contribution was as an idea person, writer, team leader and presenter.

Associate Creative Director, Dally Advertising (6/90-12/99). It's amazing what can happen when a shop is committed to strong creative from the top down. I was hired by Scott Dally as a copywriter, promoted to senior copywriter and then promoted to ACD/creative department manager with responsibilities for staffing, strategy development and presentations to clients, while continuing to concept and write. We worked on consumer and B2B accounts in all media. I built my book and learned the business here, winning a bunch of local, regional and national awards along the way.

Previous:

Senior Writer, The Phillips Agency (2/88-6/90). This was my first true ad agency job, where I worked on several healthcare accounts, including Humana, Inc., a steel manufacturer, the Opera and Easter Seals, to name a few. We were downtown, working above a hamburger joint. Good times.

Freelancer, Steve Wright's Copy (9/84-2/88). A month after my son was born, I thought it a good idea to go out on my own as a freelance writer. I worked for agencies or directly with clients like Sylvan Learning Centers, Knowles Law Publishing, Applied Data Research (mainframe computer software), Central Bank & Trust, Overton Park Bank and Possum Kingdom Liquors. I also worked construction and loaded semi trucks when work was slow.

Retail Copy Supervisor, Tandy Corporation/Radio Shack (4/82-9/84). By the end of my stay, I was responsible for copy in all retail ads, inserts, flyers, etc. I learned the basics and got promoted from junior writer to supervisor. Products ranged from the latest in personal computers to CBs, stereos and the strangely popular solar cigarette lighter. This was my boot camp, and I still have several friends from my days at the Shack.
