Public back tasers
Derbyshire police is to receive another 250 taser stun guns after
85% of the countys residents supported plans to increase their
numbers. A total of 595 people took part in a consultation in
February with 505 people (84.9%) of respondents saying they agreed
or strongly agreed that the number of tasers in the county should
be increased. Sixty two armed response officers in Derbyshire are
trained to use tasers but Chief constable Mick Creedon wants a
further 83 officers from the forces Road policing unit to be able
to use them. In derbyshire, there have been four taser discharges
since their introduction. Between april 1 2008, and January 28
2009, the taser was authorised to be drawn on 180 occasions.
I would like access to the data regarding this survey please, I
would like to know who the people were involved in the survey, not
their names of course but their ages, proffesions etc. I am
concerned that they were all police officers, as 85% of the public
would certainly not want our police to be armed with such weapons,
to suggest this is ludicrous.

Section 17 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 requires Derbyshire Constabulary, when refusing to provide such information (because the information is exempt) to provide you the applicant with a notice which:

(c) States (if that would not otherwise be apparent) why the exemption applies.

This is an absolute and class-based exemption and, as such, I am not required to complete either a public interest or harm test on the issue of disclosure.

We are unable to respond in relation to the part of your question which relates to “professions” as that did not form part of the survey and such detail is therefore not held.
The structure of the survey must be designed to be proportionate to the purpose we would not ask a question unless there was a valid reason for doing so. There would be no analytical value in asking for occupation or employment status.
The breakdown of sample was based on
- Male or Female
- Age
- Council area, the eight districts and boroughs: DerbyCity and those living outside Derbyshire.
Post codes were not requested as the results were not intended for breakdown into the 103 Safer Neighbourhood Areas.
The demographic breakdown, public report and verbatim comments are included within the disclosure on the website.
In accordance with the Act, this letter represents a Refusal Notice for this particular request.
