Free McAfee Virus and Spyware Protection

As an OSU student you are entitled to download and install a free copy of McAfee Virus protection and McAfee Anti-Spyware software.

  1. In you web browser go to
  2. Choose the tab appropriate for your operating system
  3. You will be prompted for your name.# and password to verify you are affiliated with OSU.
  4. Click on the link for:
  5. McIntosh = VirusScan 9 (McAfee security for Mac 1.0
  6. Click on link VirusScan 9 9 (McAfee security for Mac 1.0 – then Download now
  7. Windows = VirusScan V8.7i with Patch 2andVirusScan AntiSpyware V8.7
  8. Click on link VirusScan V8.7i with Patch 2 – then on Download now
  9. If you already have V8.7, download the patch and run
  10. You can download the super.dat file or have it automatically applied when you do the first Update in McAfee
  11. Click on link VirusScan AntiSpyware – then on Download now
  12. Download the software.

Installing the software:

  1. Uninstall any other virus software that you may have had installed. Go to Control Panel – Programs – Click on the software and choose uninstall. NOTE: Norton must be uninstalled for McAfee to work properly.
  2. Click on the vscan8_7_1_p2.exe and choose a folder to download the files. NOTE: If you leave the default C:\ it will create a folder called McAfee VirusScan 8.7 and places the 20 files in that folder.
  3. Navigate to the folder where the software was unzipped and click on the setup.exe icon.
  4. Click on Next.
  5. In the licensing window, click on the down arrow of the License expiry type and choose “Perpetual”. Choose the radio button to accept the terms, then click on OK.
  6. On the next screen leave the default of Typical install and click on Next.
  7. On the Protection Level leave the default of Standard Protection and click on Next.
  8. Click on Install.
  9. Make sure the Update Now box is checked and click on Finish. NOTE: If you check the Run On Demand Scan it will update the virus pattern and run a full scan of your hard drive.
  10. You must restart to complete the install.

Installing Anti-Spyware:

  1. Click on the vscanspy8_7.exe and choose a folder to download the files. NOTE: If you leave the default C:\ it will create a folder called McAfee Anti-Spyware 8.7 and places the 7 files in that folder.
  2. Navigate to the folder where the software was unzipped and click on the setup.exe icon.
  3. Click on Next
  4. In the licensing window, click on the down arrow of the License expiry type and choose “Perpetual”. Choose the radio button to accept the terms, then click on OK.
  5. Click on Finish.

Configuring the software: NOTE: If you install the Anti-Spyware, you only need to perform step 3.

  1. Click on Start – All Programs – McAfee – VirusScan Console
  2. Click on Unwanted Programs Policy and check mark all programs that you want blocked.
  3. Click on AutoUpdate
  4. Click on Schedule, then click on Schedule tab
  5. Under Run task, choose “At Startup”
  6. Under Schedule task at Startup, click on Only run this task once a day and set the delay by 20 minutes.
  7. Click Apply and then OK and exit the Virus Console
