TITLE:Mechanic (Bus Garage)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A high school education or equivalent.
  2. Mechanic trade school certificate or equivalent desirable.
  3. Bus mechanic certification is desirable (ASE or equivalent).
  4. Ability to read basic operating instructions and effectively communicate in writing and verbally.
  5. The applicant must comply with the district’s hiring prerequisites while conforming to the approved uniform policy.
  6. Bus mechanic experience or equivalent is desirable.
  7. Exhibited leadership/teamwork qualities.
  8. Must possess basic computer skills including access to email and navigating the internet.
  9. Must be able to work with budgets and ordering efficiencies.
  10. Must have own tools for most jobs.
  11. Must have a valid Driver’s License. CDL B plus PS endorsements required or willingness to secure in a timely matter.
  12. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Director of Operations and Maintenance and/or the Transportation/OperationsSupervisor.

SUPERVISES:Not Applicable

JOB GOAL:To ensure that the vehicles owned by Fraser Public Schools aremaintained in a safe manner for student transportation and district use.

ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Diagnoses potential vehicle malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed vehicle repairs and/or replacements.
  2. Inspects buses and other vehicle equipment for the purpose of ensuring it is in a safe operating condition.
  3. Provides their own tools while maintaining district equipment, shop and yard in a professional manner.
  4. Substitutes for bus drivers when needed (in emergencies only) for the purpose of ensuring a qualified person is able to run the bus on the route.
  5. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment (e.g. buses, forklifts, trucks, vans, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
  6. May be required to assist in training a mechanic helper.
  7. May perform tire work (e.g. changing, balancing, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring all buses and equipment are operating on safe tires.
  8. Responds to emergency situations as needed.
  9. Services buses and district vehicles for the purpose of ensuring it is maintained in a safe operating condition and scheduled preventative maintenance is performed.
  10. Ensures that the district’s buses are in passing order for the Michigan State Police Inspection.
  11. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in bus maintenance; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  12. Must be able to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent’s, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems, work within a budget, ordering needed supplies and parts. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: safety practices and procedures.
  13. Must also be able to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: displaying mechanical aptitude; meeting deadlines and schedules; and working with detailed information/data.
  14. The job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with the negotiated contract. Work week is Monday through Friday.

EVALUATION:: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Director of Operations and Maintenance and/or the Transportation Supervisor.
