Fire House Caretaker

General Statement of Duties:

Watches, cleans, and performs minor repairs to various types of fire equipment. Performs related work directed by the Fire District Administrator, Fire Chief, and/or his deputies.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:

This is routine work involving the responsibility for seeing that all fire equipment is constantly ready for use. Duties include watching, cleaning, and performing minor repairs to various types of fire equipment and to other property. Work is performed under general supervision, with some leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. The Caretaker might have to provide supervision over laborers, cleaners, attendants, and contracted companies performing annual inspections and testing.

Typical Work Activities: (Illustrative Only)

·  Ensures that all fire equipment and vehicles are cleaned and vehicles are ready for emergency responses.

·  Cleans interior and exteriors of apparatus and other fire department vehicles.

·  Provide apparatus checks and fills the fire trucks or any fire department vehicle with fuel, fluids, etc.

·  Notifies supervisors of any mechanical defects, breakdown, or damage to equipment.

·  Acts as a watch person at fire house during duty hours. Caretaker will answer the phone, sign for deliveries, and ensure that there is unobstructed access to the building.

·  Cleans bathrooms, toilets, showers. Sweeps and mops firehouse. Dusts and vacuums administrative offices and other areas.

·  Performs basic cleaning, minor painting, and other maintenance activities.

·  Maintains simple records. Enters fire reports and reports of repaired equipment.

·  Performs a variety of related duties as required.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Personal Characteristics:

Working knowledge of cleaning and maintenance activities; some knowledge of specialized equipment utilized in emergency services; ability to understand and carry out instructions; ability to deal effectively with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; willingness to remain on the job long hours and off hours as needed; mechanical aptitude, resourcefulness, initiative; good judgment.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or possession of a comparable diploma and one (1) year of work experience involving similar work activities. Possess a valid NJ driver’s license. Pass background investigation, character review, physical, and other test that is required by FTFD #1.

Preferred Qualifications: (Length of time can be waived by interview committee and FTFD #1)

Requirement: Minimum 2 years as an active Fire Fighter and 2 years as an active EMT. Certified EVOC, NJ FF1, Hazmat, BBP, Haz-Com, Con-space, CPR/AED, Certified NJ EMT or NREMT is required. Employee must maintain active certifications on their own. Additional firefighter training, EMS training, and rescue training is preferred.
