All fourth grade students will be learning to play the recorder this year. The study of recorder is an important element of your child’s music education and is also a part of the music curriculum for Loudoun County.
Because the recorder is played by blowing into the instrument, each student must have their own recorder. For that reason, recorders are NOT provided by the school. Each student will need to purchase his/her own recorder.
Your child may already have a recorder from a previous experience or from an older sibling or friend. You will want to sterilize a borrowed recorder prior to use by soaking it in a sterile solution or putting it in the top rack of the dishwasher.
RECORDER PURCHASE INFORMATION:
You may purchase a recorder at Melodee Music (46077 Lake Center Plaza, Sterling or 320 East Market Street, Leesburg, VA 22075) or Music & Arts Center (46900 Cedar Lake Plaza, Ste 160, Sterling. VA). All of these stores carry the Yamaha brand soprano recorder. The recorders come in different colors such as cream, blue, green and pink, and your child can select any color he/she wishes.
If you would prefer, I can place orders for the soprano recorders for your child from Macie Publishing Company at a cost of $11.00 (this includes a recorder, a methods book, a zipper bag, and the cost of shipping). For an additional $1.00 you may purchase a neck strap for the recorder with a total cost of $12.00.
To order a soprano recorder, please fill out the form on the back of this page and staple a check made payable to Steuart Weller Elementary School. I must have your order form and check no later than January23,2015.
