FOUNDATION TRAINING AT CENTRAL MCR. UNIV. HOSP. NHS TRUST

Prof. Simon Carley

Foundation Programme Director.

The foundation programme is a structured two-year training programme for doctors. The foundation programme is designed to provide junior doctors with the core skills and knowledge that will support them throughout the rest of their careers.

Why train at CMFT?

Our training programme is based in one of the oldest teaching hospitals in the country. As a major teaching hospital we are involved in education from primary school visits right through to international sub-speciality conferences. Our hospitals include Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH), St Mary’s Hospital (SMH) and the new Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH). Our clinical teams are led by consultants committed to training, many of whom have international reputations. In primary care we have links to practices across Manchester including leading practices in primary care research.

As a hospital we can only be described as exceptionally busy. However, the workload is often challenging, frequently interesting and is amazingly diverse. From the general patients in the emergency department through to the highly sub-specialist firms there are superb opportunities to learn and practice medicine.

From a lifestyle perspective we are centrally based in Manchester with easy access to the fabulous social life of the city centre. There are rapid train and air links with the rest of the country and internationally. The Pennines and North Wales are a short distance away for those who crave a less urban existence.

The teaching programme

The teaching programme is run by the foundation team within the postgraduate department. It is reflective of the trainees needs and closely follows the curriculum. Uniquely, we use an online system of communicating with trainees and trainers. This allows everyone involved to keep in touch with the programme.

All trainees are currently allocated to receive both accredited ALS and PLS training during the programme.

  • The F1 teaching programme

The teaching programme for F1s currently runs for 4 hours on a Thursday afternoon. The programme is based around the foundation curriculum, though not exclusively so. A number of other topics are covered in response to the needs of the trainees as they arise. Towards the end of the year the programme develops to include teaching and training on career progression.

  • The F2 teaching programme

The F2 formal teaching programme takes place one afternoon per week. In addition F2s are expected to attend their speciality teaching sessions. During the Emergency Medicine attachment all foundation doctors will complete an online course in basic emergency medicine (with certification). F2 teaching addresses many aspects of the curriculum. Specific sessions on teaching, education, research, publishing and careers are undertaken. As an F2 you will be expected to teach other foundation doctors and medical students.

In addition many clinical firms have speciality specific teaching which you will be expected to attend. There are also opportunities to attend and present at the grand round (Wednesday lunchtimes).

Trainee support

All trainees are allocated an educational supervisor who stays with them throughout the two year programme. In addition a specified clinical supervisor is allocated to every 4-month rotation. Ultimately, the postgraduate team has great experience in helping doctors in difficulty and will always support trainees to the best of their ability.

We do recognise that the step from medical student to qualified doctor can be a challenge for some individuals. As a foundation team and trust we are aware of this and have many mechanisms in place to support any trainee who gets into difficulty.

Careers

For many, the ultimate success of a training programme is the attainment of a speciality or general practice training place. We have an excellent record of supporting foundation docs through the application process. Many foundation doctors tell us that the support given by clinical teams within a major teaching hospital is extremely valuable when navigating job applications.

As a teaching hospital there a myriad of opportunities to join research projects, complete audits, and to develop other projects that will support your personal portfolio.

There is a dedicated careers lead who runs active sessions covering all aspects of careers. In particular there is a careers fair, a session on career planning, sessions on specialty application and interview skills training. The careers lead is also available for individual counselling.

Doctors exiting our Foundation Programme have virtually all been successful in obtaining positions in their first choice specialities.

Research

CMFT hosts the largest academic campus in the North of England and we are an integral part of the National Institute for Health Research’s Biomedical Research Centre. There are unrivalled opportunities to work alongside clinicians with international reputations in many specialities. CMFT has superb links with the university and you will meet many physicians who are active in teaching and research across all the major academic institutions within Manchester.

Summary

CMFT is a major teaching hospital that has a huge range of opportunities for foundation doctors who wish to have a successful career in medicine. There are probably easier hospitals to work in, but there are few that offer the opportunities and learning experiences that can be offered here.
