Q:If I have a Military ID, do I have to register online by March 2, 2016?

A:No, your Military ID is all you will need to get on base.

Q:What if someone over the age of 18 does NOT register online by March 2, 2016, will they be able to register on site?

A:Yes, but the process could take up to an hour and if something shows up in the background check that precludes them from access, they will NOT be allowed on base. You will need your driver’s license or State ID and one other form of ID from the list below:

  • United States Passport or United States Passport Card
  • Certified Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • School identification card with photograph
  • THE ABOVE DOCUEMENTS MUST BE ORIGINALS – NO COPIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Q:Do I need to have my current registration and proof of insurance for my vehicle?

A:Yes, please be sure to bring your current registration and proof of insurance.

Q:What do I need to bring if I am renting a vehicle in lieu of registration and insurance?

A:Please have a copy of the signed rental agreement.

Q:Do athletes over the age of 18 have to register online?

A:No, athletes over the age of 18 do not have to register on line through Fort Leonard Wood.

Q:Why do we have to follow this procedure?

A:Due to the REAL ID Act of 2005 Effective 13 January 2016, Fort Leonard Wood can no longer accept for access purposes the following state issued driver licenses (DLs) that do not meet the standards of the REAL ID Act of 2005: Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico and Washington.

Q:Do athlete have to have a photo ID?

A:As with all SOMO State Events, in an effort to provide our athletes with a safe, secure environment, we ask that they each have a SOMO issued photo ID. If your athletes do NOT have a photo ID, please work with your area program staff to ensure they have one prior to March 2.

Q.How do I figure out my SOMO area?

A.Go to and select your county from the drop down menu on the bottom left corner of the screen.

Q.How do I get to the Visitor’s Center?

A.Directions to the Visitor’s Center located at the Main Gate of Fort Leonard Wood are:

  • Coming from the west, take exit 161, then turn right on to Missouri Ave.
  • Remain on MO Ave until you reach the main gate.
  • The visitor center will belocated on left side as you enter the gate area.
  • From the east, same exit then turn left.

Q.What is the process once I submit my information via ?

A.Your information is then sent to Fort Leonard Wood. They then send an email to SOMO letting us know if you have been approved. This process can take up to 1 to 2 weeks. That is why our deadline to register is March 2 at 11:59 pm.

Q.How will I be notified that I have been approved access to Fort Leonard Wood?

A.You will receive an email from Trish Lutz, Sr. Director of Programs for Special Olympics Missouri once she is notified of your approval.

Q.What are the chances that I will not be approved?

A.As long as you do not have a warrant out for your arrest, have a criminal record for major crimes such as child abuse, sexual abuse of a minor/adult, causing a child's death, neglect of child or any other individual for whom the potential volunteer had/has responsibility, kidnapping, any degree of murder, any form of voluntary manslaughter, distribution or sale of any controlled substance or narcotic, any degree of felony assault, arson, robbery, forcible or statutory rape, forcible or statutory sodomy, felonious restraint, child molestation, deviate sexual assault, sexual misconduct involving a child, sexual abuse, criminal sexual conduct, stalking or harassment, then you should not have a problem being approved.
