Former Future Fund / QIC Investors in new Advisory Partnership

Brisbane, Australia

11/11/2013

Round Tower Solutions, a specialist consulting firm that works with both asset owners and investment managers, today launched a new investment advisory service through a partnership with Tony Day's Scarce Capital. Day is the former head of strategy at both the Future Fund and QIC.

The service is designed to explore and implement unique investment opportunities with a particular focus on direct investment by asset owners with long term investment objectives.

“Asset owners are insourcing investment management and in doing so are creating a new and differentiated source of capital. Round Tower has created a model that complements this new paradigm”, noted Aongus O’Gorman, Managing Director of Round Tower. “Tony and I have spent most of our careers researching and investing in opportunities where scale and a long investment horizon bring an edge. The time is right to bring this expertise to the market.”

O’Gorman and Day initially worked together at QIC, where O'Gorman managed a range of alternative multi-manager teams and portfolios.

"We wanted to create an approach that can make a significant difference to our clients’ returns whilst not competing with the traditional asset consulting model. We will work on one or two investment opportunities each year and only implement the ideas with a small number of clients", said O'Gorman. "Our focus is on capital scarcity, a concept that we had both being considering independently", added Day.

The team has spent much of this year researching the Aged Care industry in conjunction with an industry expert, releasing its views on the opportunity this week.

"Aged Care is a highly fragmented industry with strong demographic demand but significant long term capital needs. Superannuation funds and other long term asset owners are the ideal solution to the industry's problems, capable of providing capital whilst also generating a strong risk adjusted return and improving the quality of services that many of their members will utilise later in their lives."

Increased capital investments would also prove very popular with State and Federal Treasury departments grappling with budget deficits, potential asset sales, and the longer term costs associated with an aging population.
