Form your own political party – Part One

In your groups of 3-4, you will work together to form Canada’s next great political party.

Before you come up with a name, slogan, or promo video, you need to determine your values and party platform.

  1. Choose ONE of the following areas that your party wants to change:
  2. Voting/election process – You can consider the voting age, the electoral process (first-past-the-post, proportional representation, etc.), who can vote, who can run for office, number of ridings, etc.
  3. Criminal justice system – You can consider the Youth Criminal Justice Act (ages it affects, punishment for offenders, etc.), the court process (levels of court, problems resulting from Jordan’s decision, etc.), and the integration of restorative justice.

As a group, create a detailed description of 3+ changes that you want to make.Come up with clear explanations of the changes that you will make and explain WHY these changes will improve our country. This should be about 1/2 page – 1 page in length.

You may need to use your notes/notebooks to review aspects of these topics.

  1. Choose 3-4 of the following areas that are top priorities for your party. Each member of the group will be responsible for one area; groups of four must choose four topics.

Areas of focus
Post-secondary education
Crime
The well-being of Indigenous Canadians
Climate change
Poverty and homelessness
Military/terrorism

For your chosen areas of focus,

  1. Collect the appropriate information from the last federal election. Rank the major parties’ approaches from best to worst (by party, not by individual idea). Explain your ranking and support your answer with specific information. Feel free to ask for clarification if you don’t understand part of these descriptions.
  2. Using these examples as guidelines, come up with 3-5 ideas for how your party could address this area. These ideas should be somewhat realistic, but still mostly original. You can base a few of your ideas on the information provided.
  3. For each idea that you come up with, include a brief explanation of why you feel that this plan would benefit our country.

For each area of focus, you should have about 3/4-1 page of information/ideas.
