English paper 2 MARKING SCHEME.

Question 1:

a)  It has resulted to the highest number of deaths, more than 500 compared to the second worst case which led to 224 deaths.

b)  Ebola acquired its name from the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

c)  Fruit bats are the most common hosts of the virus according to the World Health Organization.

d)  Ebola outbreaks mostly occur in Central and West Africa where they have killed many people compared to the rest of the world where no deaths have been recorded.

e)  Ebola has similar symptoms to malaria, typhoid fever, shigellosis, cholera, and some other viral diseases.

f)  People suffering from Ebola should be kept in isolation where their body fluids should be maintained, preferably in the Intensive Care Unit. Those taking care of them must wear protective clothing to avoid being infected.

g)  The doctor who was trying to save people from Ebola died of the same disease. It is ironical that he was trying to save others but ended losing his life.

h)  i) improper handling of samples taken from infected persons

ii) Having sex with a recovering person before seven weeks are over

iii) Direct exposure to objects that are contaminated such as needles

iv) Sharing uninspected game meat or eating meat from sick or dead animals

Question 2:

i) Grusha had just left Michael outside the peasant couples house where she felt he would be taken care of. Soon after she meets with the Ironshirts on her way to Grusinia. She runs back to try and hide Michael but the Ironshirtsb catch up with her before she could have the peasant woman hid him. He eventually knocks the corporal down and manages to flee with the child.

ii) Grusha was supposed to be happy now that she has left the child who was exposing her to risk. On the contrary she is sad to have left he burden since she had become emotionally tied to the child.

iii) The enemy referred to is Michael the son to the slain Governor. The Fat Prince wanted him dead because he would remain a threat to his reign and had therefore sent the Ironshirts to hunt him down.

iv) Grusha is protective: she risked her life in order to save Michael though he was not her child.

Kind: the singer refers to her as a kind girl ` run, kind girl..’,

` In the bloodiest times there are kind people..’

Tactful: she wanted the peasant woman to take off the fine linen in order for the Ironshirts not to identify Michael

v) The Corporal never expected that Grusha could know the whereabouts of Michael but it appeared she did. This therefore came as a shock to him.

vi) Simon was her intended because they had agreed to marry once the war was over.

vii) The Ironshirts are looking for it, aren’t they? (The comma and the question mark must be there for one to score)

viii) - war leads to killings as was about to happen to Michael

-  war causes people to suffer from fear as was happening with Grusha an d the peas eant woman

-  waer causes the displacement of persons as had happened to Grusha

-  During war human rights are abused. Grusha had to answer inappropriate questions simply because the Ironshirts had an upper hand.

ix) This statement could be interpreted in two ways. The Ironshirt could have meant he wanted to have a child with Grusha or that he wanted a child that Grusha had, in this case, Michael.

Question 3:

i) The poem is about a son who is praising his African (black) mother for all she had done to and for him. In it he expresses his gratitude for all she has done for him.

ii) a) Caring:she dried his tears, bore with all his moods,

b) Hard working: woman of the fields, woman of the rivers…

iii) The son refers to her as ` woman of the fields, woman of the rivers, and woman of the great river banks.

iv) ``your own thoughts accompany me at every step’’

v) Appreciative/admiration: thank you for all you have done for me./ you who filled my heart with laughter

vi) Repetition: Black woman, O Daman, O my mother are repeated. These show the great love and respect the persona has for his mother

Ellipses: stanza 1-4 end in ellipses .this shows the persona still has more to say about his mother. It’s like he can never say it all.

vii) Stanza four focuses on parental responsibility. The persona outlines the things his mother did to him. This shows that the mother accepted and undertook her parental duties well.

viii) - hesitant/ uncertain/ unstable steps

-I am always thinking about you.

Question 4:
