RESESARCH ABROAD APPLICATION

Guidelines:

1. Submit a typed one-page Personal Statement. Tell us about your intellectual interests and how language study will further your academic and career goals. Summarize your personal statement on the reverse side of the application.

2. Submit a typed one-page abstract of your dissertation topic.

3. Submit a typed one-page summary of your proposed research project, including dates of travel, research activities to be performed (interviews, library or archive research, etc.), and tell us how your project will improve your language skills.

3. Please enclose an unofficial copy of your current NYU transcript (from or follow the links from the NYU home page via the Student Services/Albert link).

4. Ask two referees (preferably one from a language instructor) to send recommendation letters to the above addresses. You are responsible for ensuring that the letters arrive by the deadline. Please use the FLAS recommendation form attached. Recommendations can be sent or the Kevorkian Center mailing address.

Please note the following guidelines when applying for FLAS Research Abroad Awards.

1. All awards are subject to U.S. Department of Education policies.

2. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status.

3. Eligible languages for Research Abroad projects at NYU are Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Persian, Turkish, and Urdu. Applicants may apply to use other modern Middle East languages for their project.

4. Students in all graduate doctoral degree-granting programs at NYU are eligible to apply: Graduate School of Arts and Science, Tisch School of the Arts, Steinhardt School of Education, Law School, Wagner School of Public Administration and the NYU Medical school. Competitive priority will be given to applicants who are considering careers in public service.

5. Students at all levels of language proficiency, except those with native fluency, are encouraged to apply. Competitive priority will be given to students who plan to achieve Advanced level proficiency before graduation.

6. All applications must include a statement of purpose, a current transcript, and two letters of recommendation (preferably, one from a language instructor).

7. Applicants applying to both summer and academic year should submit only one set of supporting materials (i.e. transcripts and recommendations).

8. Applicants must be doctoral students who have completed all course work.

9. Research must be performed outside the U.S. during the award period (September 2016 – May 2017).

10. A project proposal must be submitted for Department of Education approval no later than July 15, 2016. Use of the target language in the research project should be the equivalent of one year of language study.

11. Preference will be given to applicants who apply for other sources of funding, if available. Applicants must advice the Center if other funding is awarded. FLAS fellows are allowed to accept other sources of funding as long as there is no duplication of funding.

12. By accepting a FLAS fellowship, you agree to respond to periodic requests from the U. S. Department of Education for information, which may include surveys and queries regarding your academic program, post-graduation activities (including additional graduate or language study you may pursue) and employment status. The U.S. Department of Education may track this information for each FLAS fellow for a period of eight years.
